blue ray is not just for games but for movies in HD, so instead of forking out R5000 for a Blue Ray Disc player PS3 already has one. And that's why PS3 is more expensive.
But you're going to have to buy movies to get the benefit. I really don't see rental outlets suddenly stocking a lot of blu-ray versions of movies, especially with the price of the PS3.

If history is anything to go by the laser in the PS3 will be poor quality and watching movies on it will wear it out very fast.

Any idea if games will be as easy to get hold of as PS2 currently? I have rarely (if ever) seen X-Box software on the shelves...

In absolute terms slightly or not at all. In relative terms they are much more expensive. And people in the UK are being overcharged relative to the US prices.

You disable the mod when you're playing online.

I prefer to save hundreds of rands through a tiny bit of patience.

I don't believe in modding, so I won't argue about it.

I don't see how you think we are relatively more expensive than the UK... Maybe you are just earning less than you think you would there?

Ok, thx. I didn't get an XBox to start with because of the apparent lack of stuff to play on it. :D

I seriously doubt that Stuff magazine had a PS3 before Sony had one?
They did not have one for the biggest game expo in the world because they lent it to a magazine to review?

Just search google for "PS3 not ready" and see what is happening with that one

My internet is dying at the office but last time I checked the RRP for Xbox 360 games in the UK is 45 pound?

45 * 13 = R585

80% of our games will cost R485 making that a saving of R100.

What don't tell me this is the first time you have heard of Rip off Britain?

As to PS3 review, why not e-mail them.

As to the pricing...
Firstly to verify my info go to www.play.com
Secondly they offer free delivery.

Game ranges:
£17.99 x 13 = R234
£24.99 x 13 = R325
£34.99 x 13 = R455
£39.99 x 13 = R520

The 80% of the games you refer to falls within your range of R485, as you stated. On www.play.com that is the £34.99 range which equates to R455. And that's currently approx. 10% cheaper than your SA prices. Also bear in mind that you get free delivery! Also, I say currently, because 2 months ago £1=R11. Enough said. ;)

Nah Man, this just proves that XBOX360 games are about 10% cheaper in the UK than in SA.;)

Just like the XBOX360 Core Pack, its currently at £189 = R2457, launch price in SA R2699.
9% more expensive.

Tomasz, you must add VAT on and R25 handling fee which customs and excise charge to make the prices fully comparable.

The purpose of this exercise was to equate the cost of the product and not the import of it. But for your info the VAT in the UK is 17.5%, so take that away from the sale price, for import/export purposes, then add you R25 handling fee and the landed product is only R16 more. and still cheaper than the SA product. ;)

Fair enough, but you still need to get it to South Africa to use it ;) and if you were to bring it in, you would still pay your 17.5%, plus SA VAT, plus handling...so unless you are lucky enough to travel to the UK to avoid the local charges....

Key words there being "launch price". In the UK their launch price would have been more than it currently is. We just got it a bit later than them, I wouldn't say that we're being ripped off at all.

PS: As to whether the PS3 will have a better GPU is up for debate. Better processor yes probably, better GPU - anyones guess.

Firstly, and again, the comparison was made on costs in the UK vs SA, not importing the product. Secondly, if you buy a product in the UK and take it back to SA you can claim the 17.5% VAT before you board the flight. And yes if the product is to be imported, various costs will apply, shipping, packaging etc. But this involves bulk buying which decreases the price. And hence this will also make the product cheaper than in SA.;)

Re: Launch price... point taken, the launch price (Core system) was £209, I paid £199 through play.com and now its at £189.00.

Re: better GPU, yep but then everything is debatable, but from the specs and reviews which I read PS3 comes out tops. However, XBOX360's graphics are stunning in HD. Fortunately I'm lucky enough to play on a HD 32" LCT TV.
