Xbox Live

The link at the end of the article is not taking you directly to this page yet, just to the main News forum.

Thanks snobee, fixed now

I switched to xbox live South Africa cause I reckoned if it will help just a little bit to get connected with local players it will be a winner. FAIL! All games are still being matched to European players. So at the end of the day it will still lag....

So you just loose more by joining Xbox Live South Africa.

This

It means saying, “Hey, it’s totally cool that you’re charging us 33% more for less, and I love the way it feels in my bum.”

My reasons were the same as Cavedog... Migrated my account in the hopes that I would get connected with local live players.
Pretty much only been playing FIFA 11 at the moment but can't find anyone local on there. Also tried Gears 2 but just got confused when trying to look for local players.
At the end of the day I'm a casual/social gamer and I don't want to have to maintain lists of local friends who play certain games (at certain times). I would much rather prefer to just hop on and let the game find me someone local to play with. Is this ever going to be a reality?

It is a fact that local taxes are higher, as are local broadband prices. So if MS South Africa are selling products locally, they are legally subject to South African laws and taxes. The same reason we pay much more for hardware, cars, and other imports here.

Not that I am happy we pay more, but sadly, we do for all our imports and a lot of it does have to do with local laws and taxes.

+1 to this article

I hate Microsoft and there agenda when it comes to doing business. I guess it's true what they say money makes you greedy and the more money you get the more money you want.

mcryan
There is a huge difference between a car and a 25 digit code that they either email to you or print on a 1.3mm thick piece of paper. R230 tax & import duties on a piece of paper that's 8cm by 5cm, yeah right! :wtf:

The problem also is it doesn't stop with Xbox LIVE, The 4GB console costs R2400, a whole thousand Rand more than what it retails for in the USA ($199). Also I read some where that if you're buying directly from the supplier you only pay $143 per console, that's about a R1000. So somewhere in between the North American coast and the South African consumer someone is raking in a whopping R1400 PER CONSOLE!!

But you know what the big corporate companies in South Africa will continue taking these chances, simply because we allow them to!

My point exactly. I just want to go in a game like Black Ops and Maybe need for speed and be connected to local players. I don't want to have like 50 random people on my friends lists that play tournaments and stuff like that.

Xbox Live South Africa doesn't even have the xvid codec to be able to play .avi files. FAIL!!!!!!

So those of you have have fallen for M$ tactics are you going to stay on SA XBox Live?

I hate the fact that everyone takes advantage of SA, including South African service providers like telscum, vodoocom, emptyN, etc. I hate the whole lot, bastards. But why is it that the whole world plunders and steels from us like this? Is there a scientific reason for that. Is it because we like to splash money and don't know it's value, is it because we're helpless. I have yet to come across a sensible explanation. It saddens me and makes me angry at the same time. ****

Once you migrated your account you can only migrate to another region 1 year later. So yes we have no choice.....

Yet on PSN I pay the same price in Rands as what I would in Pounds for my games & content.

I remember when the XBOX was launched, it was MUCH cheaper than the PS3 (I realize they were not launched at the same time, but I am referring to the ratio of ZAR : US$).
It seems at some point, someone (involved in local distribution of the XBOX) realized that people are willing to pay premiums for Nintendo and Sony's consoles, which have been over-priced from the get-go (look at the dualshock controller prices), so they upped the XBOX price as well.
The excuse has always been R/$ Exchange rate, but at this stage it is very good. We always see prices go up when the Rand weakens, but never see them drop again when it strengthens.

I migrated (I haven't bought much from the Live market) and I'm sure they will add stuff in the future.

".. but they’re bribing us to migrate with a 1600 MSP voucher.." I did not receive this voucher after the migration, does anybody know when MS will give the voucher?

I read somewhere that you should receive it within a month of migrating. Not necessarily immediately and that it wont be 1600 points either. Its up to 1600 ms pts based on how much content you have previously downloaded/bought.
