I also had (or HAVE) Orange Box. Problem is, with LINEAR games (i.e. Orange Box, C&C3), the disc can load the data largely sequentially. With non-linear games (i.e. most racing games and RPGs) the data is read by "jumping around" the disc. But don't quote me on that, I'm not too sure of the technicalities.

Do you have one of the newer consoles with the HDMI port and the BenQ drive? If you do, it was most likely the disc...

Yeah made sure I got the new one.
Going to take a trip down to the milnerton flea market as suggested by most guys here.
Hopefully I can get a game or 2.
