Xbox360 upscales normal DVD?

I know normal DVD is 480 lines, but I've just seen my panel does higher.

Does the Xbox360 upscale standard DVD? If so, do I Just set the 'display' to 720 and it automatically upscales?

Normal dvds are 720x576 which is a bit higher than 480p but it is upscaled on the 360 to hd res if running it with hd cables on an hdtv or u have a vga kit !

I hear it only upscales over HDMI or VGA cable - is that right? :/

EDIT : What I mean is that component - which I thought was HD - is excluded apparantly.

It can upscale over composite cable, but they don't have the legal rights to do it, so only HDMI and VGA cable will upscale on the Xbox360.

i think you mean component, composite is the ****ty yellow, red and white cable.

The stupid design of the Xbox360 is really irritating! I can either use HDMI to upscale (then use TV sound) or optical out to get decent sound on my AV. I can't use both :/

There is a way, but you would need to trim your cable connectors so that you can fit both HDMI and optical in. Just google it.

If you using HDMI you shouldn't have to change any display settings on the console as they should automatically be selected.

The Xbox website also states that the Xbox 360 Elite will upscale DVD video out of the box. This contrasts with the current Xbox 360 versions which output DVD playback at 480p in NTSC regions or 576p in PAL regions. A VGA cable is required to upscale DVD playback to high definition on current Xbox 360 models (meaning xenon models).
