XFX 8800GT new generation equivalent?

hi guys

last night I fried my mates XFX 8800 GT :o

So I need to replace the card with something that is the same speed/bit faster, but no dealers still stock the 8xxx series. Just went through all my price lists... :confused:

So what card am I looking at here? Will a 9600GT be on the same level or not? I think that might be a bit slower if Im not mistaken..

and slightly off-topic.. he paid about R2500 for the card(was quite a while back). So should I be giving him the R2500 or should I be replacing the card with something the same level/faster?

which one is fair/the right thing to do :confused:

9600 GT is slower than a 8800GT(which is exactly the same as an 9800GT BTW:)). I don't think you need to give him the R2500 at all....There are cards that are quite a bit superior to the 8800GT and cheaper than R2500 :)(4870 eg.)


EDIT: You could look at getting him an 4850 which performs better than a 9800GT :)

either a 4850/4870 or at least a 260 gtx.
 
I just need to confirm that this gfx card is indeed stuffed...

I can POST with the card no problem, and I can get into windows, but the screen is quite the mess... lots of artifacting!

Could this be a result of the extreme heat it was subjected to, and has now damaged the GPU?

Would flashing the BIOS on the gfx card help?

So what actually happened...?
 
basically we left the PC running on its side, and its got a heatpipe cooler on it... no fan. Im under the impression that it wont cool effectively while lying on its side... :confused:

we were playing games and his PC froze. I touched the CPU cooler, no problem there... gfx cooler was HOT! like Im talking burning to the touch hot here... His PC never normally freezes, but then his PC never lies down... always standing up!

Reckon this damaged the card somehow?
 
did the card come out with the heatpipe cooler or was it added on? Those 8800gt's do run quite hot, maybe it needs some ventilation over the heatpipe cooler from a fan to not overheat.
