XFX 8800GT new generation equivalent?

...and remember some cards require at least 560 or 650 wat psu.

mm I wanted to upgrade only the GPU..

I was looking at the 4850 or 30 doesn't matter...
Does one really have to upgrade the PSU 2?

I've got a 500w from Gigabyte?

ok now I am CONFUSED!

So I booted into Windows with his PC, with the stuffed gfx and tried to install rivatuner... got half way and PC froze. Ok so I check the heatpipe and its burning hot again! And the PC is standing UP!

So I have just popped a 120mm fan on this thing, and now Im running pretty no problems! I just ran some company of heroes, and temps is sitting at 39 while playing the game... heatpipes are only slightly warm!

I dont have the stock coller on here here hey, I managed to convince him (after he broke his cooler fans) to buy one of these

http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/vga/hr03reva/product_vga_cooler_hr03reva.htm

question is why on earth was this PC running FINE without a fan and now all of a sudden it needs a fan!?

Worth mentioning that his CPU cooler bracket broke, and the heatsink+fan fell onto his graphics card. His PC wasnt on (so Im told) at the time, could this have any effect?

Hehe now I will take the money you were going to spend on a new card. :-)

FFS

this is BS

This PC has been running no problem for months with this cooler and now its an issue.

Rivatuner is reporting 35 under idle, but when I take the fan off it just rises and rises till about 60 then artifacts everywhere... and this is under idle!

Could it be possible that there is something wrong with the heatpipes?

it be daft to buy a 8800gt now; rather go the red (4850/70) or green path (260 gtx)...

...for example EVGA 896-P3-1257-A1 GeForce GTX260 Core 216 Superclocked @ R 2,570.00

i'm quite sure 4870 1gig also is around 2K somewhere

:update
ok i can't find a 4870 for around 2k, most prices seem to be around 3K rather.

Why would you want to buy a more expensive card that isn't for you? He's replacing the card he broke, not upgrading. A 9800GT would be the best/cheapest.

If the friend wants an upgrade at the same time he can add money..

It doesn't really matter now that you've got the fan though does it? But obviously something is wrong with the heatpipies, they might not be seated properly.

nah its not the heatpipes hey, I can feel an equal amount of heat coming through each heatpipe... I also took the whole thing off, cleaned it, and reset it with fresh thermal paste.

Im thinking the card has just craped out after running so long without a fan on the heatsink, possible?

maybe the poor card died of to much fondling excitement...

Dude, not all games make the GPU work under the same amount of stress. The 8800GT will go to 105C on a stock cooler (also depends on the size of the fan) - but u say there isnt one? Weird! Put a fan on the damn thing and control it with rivatuner. If you artifact and freeze up at 60C then sumthin wrong with the card!

My old 8800GT would idle at 55C - 65C with rivatuner and fan control setup would max out at about 75C - 85C. The card is 3yrs old and still does not miss a beat.

I can't say I have ever seen or heard of a 8800GT withought a fan and only heat sinks. Wow that is madness, no wonder it is overheating.

I have a zalman cooler on mine and just manages to keep it cool.

Put a decent fan on it and it will be fine.

Why do you have to buy a next gen equivalent? If someone smashed my 88 bmw I wouldnt expect them to buy me a 2009 'equivalent'.

Tried explaining that already to him...

problem is I cant get my hands on a XFX 8800GT Zalman Edition... :(

Anyone?

Is this how the card looks?

So when you place the extra fan on the GFX card is the fan on the heatsink also running?

yes that is the card. Remember that his original cooler broke, the one in the pic, and he replaced it with a thermalright cooler...

that is the one that Im currently working with, and I added a 120mm fan to that one!

Idle temp is 40 degrees with thermalright heatsink and 120mm fan, take the fan off and temp goes to about 60 before crashing...

must be damaged from playing all this time with no fan on it...

That card is worth TOPS R1,200 secondhand - and it is was a secondhand card that by the sounds of things was being used irresponsibly anyway - with no fan he could have burned out his PC. You may have added the final straw but he was the one who whipped it to breaking point. Ok to further the analogy - I can't expect someone to buy me an identical car to mine, but if they would pay me realistic market value or find me something equivalent it would be fine.

2ndhand 4850s are going dirt cheap now...a 2ndhand 8800 isn't worth all that much imo.

thanks for the posts guys..

another question, we had the PC running on its side, so it wasnt standing up correctly... Does that make any difference to the effectiveness of the heatpipes on the card? The orientation on the PC I mean...
