that is the one that Im currently working with, and I added a 120mm fan to that one!

Idle temp is 40 degrees with thermalright heatsink and 120mm fan, take the fan off and temp goes to about 60 before crashing...

must be damaged from playing all this time with no fan on it... :confused:

Sorry but there is something I don't quite get....so with the 120mm fan placed on the card its functions fine?:confused: Right? So why not just leave the bloody fan on the heatsink?

Possibly...I know certain heatsink need to be placed a certain way for them to function adequately. Don't know if this is the case with the thermalrights though.
 
Exactly what I was gettnig at Zenbaas - That card is not designed to run without a fan!!!! The pipes are not designed to cool it on its own. Unless I am missing something here, that is a really daft thing to do and its no wonder the card is naffed now. :rolleyes:

I have a feeling thats it the Thermalright HR-03GT that has been mounted on his GFX card which is able to cool your GFX card passively(without a fan) if you have good ventilation in your case but:

Yes, HR-03 GT can cool the 8800 GT even without a cooling fan given that the airflow inside your case is bountiful. A good air management would have clean air in and exhaust air out. If installed the HR-03 GT in the Type 1 method, you could utilize the air generated by the fan used on the CPU heatsink, such as our Ultra-120 eXtreme for even better cooling result.

nah its not the HR-03 GT hey... its the HR-03 Rev.A

I would imagine that the GT version would cool much better as it has another 2 heatpipes?

Yes it would cool better.
So the HR03 never had a fan on it to begin with? How is the cooling in his case?

And with the fan now on it: does it work fine? Does it still artfact when playing games? What are the temps like when playing games with the fan added?

That is correct, no fan to begin with.. His cooling is not great, its negative pressure system via a single 120mm fan at the rear. no other case cooling, just CPU and PSU fans..

Yes it works "fine" though temps are definitely a lot higher after the PC crashed on Saturday evening. No it doesnt artifact when playing games, though I only played Company of heroes for about 20 min. I havent checked the temp under load with the fan on, I must check that tonight..

Check that and then I'll comment:p Also if the temps seem reasonable with company of heroes then try something more GPU intensive like crysis if you have it and post the temps here.

EDIT: And a single 120mm fan on the back of the case...? Thats it? And then still wanting to have it "passively" cool with effectively one fan ventilating the entire case..? Oi....

All of this "testing" is it happening with the side panel of the case in place or removed. You will find that your card sometimes will run hotter with the side panel off as no airflow is created with the side panel off. You need the "tunnel" effect.

I had that with a passively cooled HD4850 the one day when I was playing around and forgot to close my case. Temps increased to over 100c.
 
Why do you have to replace his card? It's his fault it's broken, he should have had better cooling on the card, i don't see how placing the tower on its side would cause the gpu to overheat
 
XFX warranty void ?

does anyone know if the warranty is void on the XFX cards if you put on an after-market cooler?

This card was bought towards the end of 2008 so it will still be under warranty... hopefully I can RMA it? :confused:

If you can replace(remount) the original fan and heatsink then I think you can at least try to RMA it....?

And if he just had a fan on it like he should of in the first place then it would of been fine either way:)

Having the case closed I can assure you would not have saved the card....

Having the fan on, yes. Taking the fan off is what naffed that card. :rolleyes:
 
guess we all learn from our mistakes hey...

chalk it up as a loss, wont ever touch his PC again :sick:
