Xiaomi Mi A1 (5X)

Redmi Note 4 thread also having issues with a Xiaomi+Telkom combo, including random reboots. Astounding that a network can affect a phone so negatively.

I found if you force it to only use MTN its' better.

Does anyone find that their mobile data struggles to connect sometimes? Once it's on it stays on, but if I disable it for whatever reason (wifi on, aeroplane mode, etc) it sometimes doesn't connect again. The signal is there so I can make phone calls, but it won't connect. I've got some success by trying to force certain band/frequencies using a signal tool app, but nothing consistent.

I am on Telkom, and use a custom rom.

I'm not sure if the stock ROM has the same issue but I'm a little hesitant to test it since I have my whole set up done on my phone and it would be quite a story to redo all the customizations :(

I tried to flash the modem.img from the stock ROM but it made no difference.

It's almost like it is struggling to authenticate with Telkom, but I've checked the apn settings and they look right compared to what the internet sites say they should be.

Any advice?

Never had this on my A1. Other people in my house also using xiaomi but not the A1 also don't have issues

I've had this issue with other phones as well, I don't think it's the actual phone but rather Telkom's network that isn't up to scratch.

How's everyone's battery life?

I use Bluetooth headphones at gym in the morning for 2 hours or so. Then light use for the rest of the day. By 10pm it's on it's last legs.

Has anyone installed a custom ROM and gotten better battery life?

Whatsapp web via wifi from 7am to 4:30pm daily. 2-3hrs of in car Bluetooth. Hour of Twitter screen on time and hour or 2 of calls. 70% battery left when I get home at 5pm daily.

Update on connectivity issues:
Touch wood, seems the issue was specifically with Telkom. Using Telkom mobile data I struggled to connect consistently. Forcing the phone to use MTN frequencies helped with the connectivity and I'm testing it out now.
Also, ordered an Afrihost (MTN) sim and no issues connecting (disabled all forcing of frequencies).

I'm going to try Afrihost for a month or so to confirm, but seems it is definitely an issue with Telkom Mobile specifically

MIA Africa does not list this device on their website anymore. Is it not officially being sold in SA now?

Who knows WTF their gameplan is - they only offered the Mi A1 for a couple of weeks and then it vanished from their site. Gearbest has plenty of stock and at $205 (incl Aramex courier) + import taxes, well worth the 2-3 week wait...

This was such a big issue for me, that it is worth posting here too:

Since I got my Mi A1, I have had a Voda sim in slot 1 and MTN sim in slot 2. The MTN sim is for data and calling, Voda for calling only. If I have 4G enabled for the MTN sim and I am on a call, the call drops less than a minute in and the phone would spaz out dropping all signal for both sims and would take a good few seconds to recover and regain signal. If I set the MTN sim to 3G only, the problem never happens.

Out of frustration of always only having 3G, I swapped the sims around and set MTN in slot 1 to 4G. Problem is gone. No call drops, no spaz out with signal. Perfect! Clearly slot 1 on these phone's is more suited to being the data enabled slot and slot 2 only for 2G/3G voice...

I am so happy to have fixed such an irritating problem!

8.1 rolling out. SMS bug wipes all sms's. A few other unconfirmed complaints of increased battery drain. I'll wait for more real world feedback before I update as 8.0 has been a buggy nightmare for me.

I haven't received any update notification for 8.1 yet - I wonder how long it will stay on 8.1 once it is updated - according to rumors Android P will probably start rolling out in August.

Hmm.

I'm still 8.0.0, patch level 5 May.

No update available.

Telkom network and A1 phone from Gearbest (if that makes a difference?)

Forgot to post the update. 8.1 rollout was stopped due to the sms wipe bug. We now wait for the fixed 8.1 to begin rolling out...

Just checked on mine - update is available at a whopping 1152.0mb
