I'm interested in the Mi Box, but surround sound is very important to me, so I've been reading a bit and found out the following...

About Netflix...
Netflix surround sound is in DD+ format. So your sound bar or amp will need to support this.
DD+ can't pass over a SPDIF/Optical interface, only HDMI 1.3 or newer.
As far a I understand, the Mi Box Mi Box can't down mix DD+ to normal DD 5.1 for output on SDPIF/Optical.

I think you should be able to play video files (that have DD 5.1 or DTS) with a player like MX Player, and the surround sound should be output on the HDMI and/or Optical correctly. Edit: This may only be possible with the Oreo update...
Can you not run RF from audio out on your TV straight into your amp, and leave mibox to do its HDMI video.

No way that poor little thing can keep up with all the audio demands.

Any idea why this would be, or suggestions for a workaround?
I think the box detects it as a mobile Hotspot. I saw a message somewhere saying that it is using mobile data and that there may be unforseen mobile charges...

I didn't peruse a solution, I just switched to my router... One solution may be to use a wireless range extender to fool it into not knowing its a Hotspot on a phone. I can test this if you would like.

I have a mobile router that can act as a wireless range extender, so it woud connect to the Hotspot on the phone & then I would connect to the mobile router form the Mi box if that makes sense.

I guess that could work. Might actually be easier simply to pop the phone SIM into my router. That way no one can phone me to interrupt my viewing either

Just tested. The app comes up with this: View attachment 551871 when using a Hotspot format a phone.

I have just tested and the workaround to connect via a wireless range extender works for me.

Saw that Mia Africa have these for cheap https://mia.africa.com/za/mi-wi-fi-repeater-2
I can't confirm if they would work for this or not.

I can't access your attachment. Isn't there a way we can ask DSTV to fix the issue? I can't see that it is meant to be that way.

I have the mi box3 for a week now and updated to Oreo.

My streams seem to freeze on YouTube and Netflix, but the audio continues. Then the video fast forwards to where the audio is. The same happens when casting from my phone. WiFi also drops quite often.

These issues are quite irritating and I end up reverting to my older Roku box.

I have read that a lot of the video playback issues may be WiFi related. A few people said that using a USB Ethernet adapter solved those problem. I might give that a try. You could also try a different WiFi channel?

I was showing my folks the mi box and the voice recognition. Just to say that saying "Netflix" apparently also sounds like saying "sex" and searched for it. Sigh haha

The Mi-Box is moving up to Oreo, unfortunately not making the move without issues that affect users differently, I am holding off on updating as it is used on our main TV, and my significant other is not understanding of hassles caused by new updates. :)

Whats the benefit of this box over the Telkom LIT Android media box?

Mainly looking to use this to stream DSTV now, Plex and play local video off a USB hard drive.

Also considering Apple TV but the downsides seem to be cost and difficulty in playing local content.
