I thought the official thread was the 'Xiaomi is planning to enter the market in September' or something along those lines

I have yet to attempt AOSP, maybe when I get the Note 4 I'll play around with them on the Note 2. Don't want to risk my daily driver just yet.

They are pretty solid now. Can always go back to miui if you are not feeling it. The Camera is the only iffy thing.

We just need a thread title change so the guys know and the OP to have the basics about importing. So we don't have to repeat the same things over and over.
 
I meant more along the lines of a softbrick. Right after I got my Note 2 there was an update via OTA that caused a bootloop. I was up until the next morning 4AM trying to get it to work again. I zombied through that day

So just a little scared of doing it to my only phone.

I agree with editing this thread title but it would also be nice if we could have a thread with proper indices to info mentioned here and formatted nicely for newbies to find the info they need without trawling through the thread.

I'd gladly assist in getting something like this setup but I'd have no idea where to start

Did you use DHL shipping?

What happens in terms of warranty and repairs for the phone?

Is this the upgrade of the Note 3 that's available locally?

Note that its the Mediatek chipset and not the Snapdragon version. So I bet it will have a custom China or Dev ROM and you most probably will have to unlock to flash Global ROM. Gearbest don't add bloat on the custom ROMs so its not a must but you will most likely not be able to OTA upgrade unless you flash.

Gearbest support I would say is a hit & miss. I have had no problems with them when I had a phone with reboot-loop that I send back for replacement. Some people here had issues with them. Xiaomi also do have local support agents now, so you might try your luck and have them cover warranty related repairs if you have them.

Other things to note: Helio X20 score higher on bench than SD625 but is more power hungry and also lack some custom ROM support. So it all depends what your needs are. Both the Helio X20 and SD625 versions of the Note 4 are better than the Note 3 so both would be upgrades.

Edit: also note the Note 4's Helio x20 use Mali T880 which doesn't perform as good as the SD625's Adreno 506.

Courier via DHL to SA was too expensive so chose standard shipping with Amarex instead. Should still arrive within 2 weeks.

In case of warranty claim it will need to go back to Gearbest. Never dealt with them before so not sure what to expect.

Yeah, upgrade of the Note 3. This was much cheaper than buying locally and just made more sense.

The listing was quite specific saying it was the "original and international ROM with multi languages and OTA support" so hoping not to have to flash another ROM.

Their support seems okay. I ordered a Mi5 a few weeks ago and they were unable to supply so I requested a refund and it was processed immediately.

The note 4 comes with a locked bootloader. It's a bit of a pain to unlock and then flash custom roms. Your phone should come with one of the official Roms. (My banggood one did) and its easy to flash another official or do ota
 
Interesting update: After updating to latest Global Dev on the imported Mi5, a new menu appeared on my About Phone section called Regulatory information when pressed I got:

I too got the mail this morning to say that my Note 4 is delayed a bit. Strange to have received it on a Sunday

@AlphaJohn I wonder if the phones report back to the carriers which brand and model of phone it is and as such maybe download the regulatory information in the background as part of a carrier OTA push message?

EDIT: I tried out the AOSP found on XDA-Developers but I kept getting an android.process.acore error and it would not go past the setup wizard.

Trying out LineageOS now to see how it performs on the MTK of the RN2 that I have

My Redmi Note 3 is hovering around the 1GB free storage space mark constantly. I have deleted everything from within gallery, cleared everything using the clean up and deep cleanup tool, yet the problem remains. My downloads folder is empty and I have no movies or music stored on the device. I can't figure out WTF is going on.

Any known hidden old data which I can find and delete? I am really not keen to factory reset and set up the phone from scratch again to get my space back (I am using both sim slots so no chance of an SD Card and not keen to do the McGyver trick for the second slot)?

I have even moved to Facebook lite (normal Facebook app is almost 300mb) but I still get the storage space warning and have to clean twice a day!
