Why so? Sorry just curious to know rather than read through 70 pages of this thread. I've heard nothing but good things , just want to know what the screen and response time is like.
1. Getting regular OS updates.
2. Insane battery. After 2 days of (my) normal usage I'm on 50% battery life.
3. Smooooth UI.
4. Crisp Full HD screen.
5. Never lags.
6. I only paid R1899 with the WeChat special.
Only two downsides I can see are:
1. Need a cover and screen protector, as I have some tiny scratches after a few months (not that bad)
2. Difficulty getting covers in SA. The one I ordered from Takealot didn't fit so I had to send it back.

The kernel is in the Rom you downloaded. Before you can flash the Rom you need to install TWRP ZCX version. Also the firmware on the phone needs to be compatible with the Rom you downloaded.so i've unlocked the bootloader and downloaded lineage os 14.1 and gapps, i am more or less ready to flash, do i need to update the kernel? (Kate version)
Speaking of Kernel... Look what just downloaded...so i've unlocked the bootloader and downloaded lineage os 14.1 and gapps, i am more or less ready to flash, do i need to update the kernel? (Kate version)

If you are installing Los that's on Android 7.1.2 then you need 7.1.2 gapps. Just remember that. Before you flash Los make a nandroid back up of your miui rom just in case.
which firmware do you use before flashing los 14.1?

I'd go with Psyman's firmware just to be safe. I see he updated it on the 12th. Good enough I say.
Technically firmware is the correct term but nobody calls it that in the XDA realm.brilliant, was just looking at Psyman's, any particular reason why this over normal nightly builds from lineage themselves?(https://download.lineageos.org/kenzo)
or maybe i am a complete noob and firmware and OS are separate things?![]()

Firmware is separate to a custom rom. The most important thing to note with the firmware is that is must state that it will not relock your bootloader. Psymans complies.
After you have ZCX TWRP installed. Flash the firmware, flash your rom, Gapps wipe dalvik and cache and you should be good. If weird sh*t happens you will need to clean flash.
If your bootloader is locked and you flash a rom it won't flash the kernel and essentially you will end up with bootloop.i see i see, any reason why it mustn't relock the bootloader? (i unlocked mine officially)
Another thing, why ZCX TWRP over normal TWRP(i have TWRP installed already)?
And lastly, if i flash Psyman's firmware, whats the most stable android 7.1 rom to use?
If your bootloader is locked and you flash a rom it won't flash the kernel and essentially you will end up with bootloop.
If your TWRP is working I guess your good. I know a few guys had to switch to ZCX owing to flashing issues.
Best 3 are LOS , NOS and RR. Depends what you are after. Stock? LOS. Customisation? RR. Balance between stock and customisation and battery life? Nos.
Then once you've settled flash Radon Kernel for ultimate battery life.
It pretty much is.
I created an official Xiaomi thread but haven't tended to it in a while unfortunately. I switched jobs a few weeks ago and it's been a bit chaotic my side so I haven't had much chance to do more edits and consolidate the info as I would like
