Xiaomi Redmi Note 4/4X

I'm quite bleak that Note 4 SD did not get the Helio's body - this sole reason will stop me from buying one and rather waiting for Note 5. WTF would they have done that do you think?

To be honest you don't notice it even less to moment you have any cover on the phone.

Personally I went with a textured cover after the 1st fall that dented the back of my phone.

Since changing to mid range devices, I've stuck with using them naked for max texture enjoyment. I have no complaints regarding my Note 3 with a special mention of how lekker it is when its metal is ice cold in the morning.

It's just that, when changing devices, you want something different. Note 4 SD is too similiar looking to Note 3 for me. I have liked the look of Note 4 Helio since it was announced, but I only buy phones with local warranty.

Out of curiosity, how many times have you had to use the warranty on a phone? I'd be very interested in a survey to show what the actual failure rate of phones is. Of the 8 or 9 phones I've imported over the years, only one has failed on me, but perhaps I'm just fortunate.

People with the Note 4 MTK; how long does your battery last? Mine comfortably lasts the day with heavy usage. I charge it at night. Havent tried to run it empty yet.

I did have a problem with the phone not sleeping when I had a 3g sim card in it. So instead of doing a sim swap I flashed a custom AOSP Rom on it:D.

I just see some enormous battery figures here and Im curious

The one I sold use to have 35/45% left at the end of the day. So daily charge was needed.

On Note 4 SD I get about 2 to 3 days on a single charge.

Not since Blackberry Torch did I use the warranty, so you do make a point. My S4 and S5 were sold in perfect condition with no ADH's used.

Sorry for the late review, have been very busy and typed a review a while ago then my LG G4 froze and that was the end of it.

Xiaomi Note 4X review by RV:

So my wife has been using the phone for about a week and I've played with it. She is not a heavy user, use it mostly for phoning clients, Amazon Kindle, YouTube videos and general communication.

Pros:
Since she's got it, it has probably only been charged 2 or 3 times, so basically 3 days of battery use. This is great.
Fingerprint reader works great, easy to unlock screen directly from sleep. So there is no need for finger swiping the screen etc. You can register more than one fingerprint. Display and brightens looks great. You can use double tap on the display to wake it up. The phone also responds well and no delay switching between applications etc. Lots of memory, even with all the crapware. I had to cut her SIM to fit the micro sim slot and there was no issues. For a 3K phone the camera works well, good quality when there is good lighting. Will still try an alternative camera application.
The stock MIUI looks nice and she likes it. I noticed though when using the Time Widget you can't center the widget properly or change it much, so personally I'll prefer Nova Launcher with finer grid settings and customization.

Cons:
You need to register the phone with an MI account otherwise it just doesn't work. I don't see the need to have a Google Account and an MI Account. After registering the MI Account I just disabled everything related to MI. So the account is just there to keep the phone and its creators happy. Lots of crapware on the phone, but this is to be expected.

Fingerprint reader and double tap: I hate buttons (thanks to the faulty buttons on my LG G4). As I said the finger print reader is great to unlock and the double tap is also handy. Would be nice if you can lock the phone with finger print or at least then lock the phone with double tap. This way there is no need to reach for that button to lock the phone or instantly turn of the display.

Camera lens is too close to fingerprint reader or there is no real division between them. A couple of times the fingerprint reader just doesn't respond because my finger is on the camera lens and not on the reader. Yes, maybe I am the only one and the problem might be the user here. I think this might get the camera lens scratched and a sort of division would be nice.

The charger doesn't connect easily to the phone, you have to force it a little bit until it makes a click sound. Is this normal? I can foresee that I'll have to order a charging port replacement in the near future. A Type-C port would have been great.

Glass Screen protector I ordered with the phone is too small and doesn't stick to the round edges, this is a known issue. Not sure if there is a solution though.

Conclusion:
This is a great phone for its price with excellent battery life, but there is room for improvement that won't affect the price of the phone.

Normally I would say Gearbest... but I had problems getting headphones from them via DHL that contained Lith batteries last month. Odly enough RedViking got his Xiaomi note 4 from them at the same time. My 3D printer came at the same time no issues. I did get a full refund on the Headphones so I had no worries about the $$$.

So You can try them and see if you have RedViking's luck.

Other option is to go for local via Mia's site: https://mia.africa.com/za/redmi-phones/redmi-note-4-32gb/redmi-note-4-32gb-black

trying to save some bucks
Afrihost has the same price with 500mbx12 data included

Shipping from overseas retailers can be either:

1) fast,
2) reliable or
3) cheap.

Choose two :D

As an aside, has anyone tried using Aramex Global Shopper for importing devices with Lithium batteries before?

Ok now that is not a bad deal, Thanx. I know of someone that was looking for it locally and the included data just made it sweeter.

Seeing that they now selling locally maybe I must use my Gearbest points and get some extra covers on my next shipment.

do the 4 and 4x use the same covers?

do the 4 and 4x use the same covers?

Depends on the cover. Some covers can work for both, others are dedicated. The only thing that change between them is the location of IR blaster.

Note 4X

As you can see the headphone jack stays spot on but IR and Noise mic moves.
Some covers cater for this with long slots example:

Personally I use this: (From Gearbest)

Mostly because of how it feels. Solid yet textured. and it doesn't impact the size.

Gearbest... My 4x arrived yesterday via DHL

My experience with Gearbest has been very good and fast. Just bought a 3D printer from them and was delivered faster than what I thought. But it is always nice to have local warranty in case something goes wrong. Buying from China is a bit of a gamble. The R3600 deal from afrihost with data is not bad.
