Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not upgrade, but rather do a clean install. This is because XP and Win7 have different kernels. Personally, I would take their advice.

A lot of your old software should work just fine with Win7. If it worked with Vista it will work with Win7. There is also an XP compatibility mode that you can use to make it work.

I would def do a clean install. whats the easiest way to get Win7. I heard it is still downloadable for free?

All my stuff works so far. I have Win 7 installed on two of my machines....

no, the Beta has ended, and that RC version is version 7100. The release version is 7600. There are a few cracked versions floating around the P2P sites. The official version is still a month away from the stores.

OK, misunderstood the question. Rather take the opportunity to reinstall fresh....

Well getting it is another problem and its going to be expensive.

To run your XP programs M$ is releasing a built in virtual machine that has a 99.9% compatibility apparently.

Anyway what are your reasons for upgrading?

I've heard from many sources that it is best to do a clean install for Windows 7.

If you're going from Vista, upgrade, but from XP, clean install.

Personally, I don't want to because I'm too lazy to get my PC up to the way I like it, but yeah... each to their own.

But if people ask me, I say clean install for Windows 7.

And if you're on Neotel... brace yourself for issues!

Upgrading leaves so much detritus & is a sure fire way to a slower system. Clean install is ALWAYS the best.

there isnt really an upgrade path from xp to win7. not that me or any of the microsoft documents i have read suggest.

and when i was stupid enough to try it using win7 rtm from a xppro sp3 machine, it actually popped up a box saying "yo! werner! dont be thick, this cant be done man". My sons vista machine, did however upgrade just fine

so i would actually say, from experience, you arent going to do an in-place upgrade. it is going to be backup, format, reinstall, restore data if you are on xp now and have a win7 urge

Win7 runs fine on my Laptop: 1.4 Celeron with 1GB RAM.

Regarding the upgrade, I tried it on my two machines and it did not work. It is however possible to install Windows 7 from within XP which is cool. It backs up your program files, Docs and settings and Windows directory; and replaces them with new ones. Process was smooth - very happy with Win 7 all round.

What no one seems to have told you, you cannot upgrade directly to Windows 7 from XP. You must either format and install Windows 7. Or you can go from Windows XP>Vista>7

I remember someone saying this, but his answer was "half hearted" as he wasn't sure.
