Well I'm a xp user right. And ive been thinking of starting to use Linux for a while now. What do you guys think? Should I make the change? or just put it on a seperate hd and try it out?

Good idea - then you can't delete your windows install by mistake.
I did have a dual boot on a single hard drive on my pc. The linux install does allow you to change the size of the existing partitions. But you have to be very careful when doing that.

Try using something like VirtualBox, Virtual PC or VMware and test it in there.

Or you could use something like VMWare and install Linux as a virtual computer. That way you don't need to use a separate drive or boot exclusively into Linux or format anything. When you're done playing around you simply close it and get back to Windows.

what does linux do that xp does not?
xp does everything linux does plus gaming

Except for viruses and a R1,000 price 
If you're a gamer, then Linux probably isn't the choice for you. If you're interested in learning new technology which is supported by a large community, then I'd suggest installing Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) on that spare HDD

Suppose better is a matter of perception.
I can do the following simultaneously on Linux without my system feeling like an oil tanker trying to turn:
create a dvd from xvid files
watch tv (via a TV card without a hardware encoder)
play fm2008 via wine
surf the internet
just trying to watch tv and do anything else on XP is an exercise in frustration.

Yeah - ripping a DVD while doing this - actually forgot about it until you mentioned it. And this machine could barely open FF when it was a XP PC.
Thats a healthy start - step 1 is admitting the problem.

You dont know what he is going to do with it so how on earth can you assure him its the "smarter" choice?
If anything it is a different choice and a great excuse to try something new.

But to be fair, linux is the better choice in most cases. Give me a list of 1000 random PC functions, and more than 500 of those will be better and easier on linux. Better?

yeah.....nice.....all good. I don't give a damn about your opinion because it's wrong. XP does not work. XP breaks. Often. Only difference is you've known it so long you know where to go poke to change/fix things.
Games? More and more being written for Linux. It's not XP that does games, it's games that do XP. And more and more people are seeing the benefit of using/backing open source technologies, and consequently more and more are doing so.
Read up, and challenge what I've said to you here. I'm fully ready for a valid and decent DEBATE. Thus, anyone who wants to do a namecalling fest, fsckoff.
