Hi All

I'm in a dilemma. S.O. needs a car urgently. We no longer travel to the same places anymore so things are hectic at the moment.

Looking to spend 70k to 80k and the bulk of the cars that come up are a handful of Yaris hatches with a larger amount of Hyundai Getz. The Getz are the high spec models.

The criteria are it must be:
1.Extremely reliable. That is, turn the key and drive everyday.
2.Prefer larger meatier vehicles like the size of the two above mentioned cars as opposed to something like an i10 or Atos which is rather dinky.

What I would really like to know from Getz owners is the good and the bad, especially the bad, of owning the car and likely dealer servicing costs, etc. Is it a worthwhile buy?

I've had a getz from 2008, put 110 000km on the clock so far, and apart from services, brakes and one battery, I haven't spent a cent on maintanance

There's some good Corolla's 2004 upwards in that price range with FSH and more car than either the Yaris or Getz.

Getz is very good. A mate has a Yaris and that's bulletproof

Yaris has a steel chassis, excellent brakes and fantastic economy (my 2008 1.3L 5 door gets 6.4L/100km in joziburg).

Friend has a getz. Feels like plastic.

EDIT: And it's a Toyota, which means it'll go forever.

This. Yaris build quality is far superior. However look at the Picanto as well, the build quality on those are outstanding and they are also very reliable and very cheap to maintain.

Both are rather long in the tooth and fairly bland. Since you are looking at a B-segment car why not get something with a bit more personality and good quality too. Here is one that fits perfectly into your budget.

Excellent condition 2008 model with only 89000km on the clock, yours for R75k:

I drive a Yaris at the moment. It does its job as a car and is reliable.

A corolla will be too big for her as a first car. She's studying and working part time so maintenance costs must be low. Plus the mileage will be high on those cars without airbags. If anything goes wrong with it she wouldn't have a clue.

I'm in Durban but up Gauteng there are a lot more cars on sale at decent prices. Sadly we just don't have the time to drive up and investigate. She used to drive a tazz so anything is an upgrade from that.

What's the major and minor service cost on these? Is it serviced at the dealer? Is a cambelt replacement necessary as well?

A Honda Jazz may be in your price range, and they are said to be very reliable vehicles.

^^^ This

Reliability, all three (i.e. yaris, jazz & getz) will be reliable. However, like Roux said, the chosen two are a bit long in the tooth. My choice - jazz

I have my Getz for about 2 years now and no problems at all.

Its a 2010 1.4 HS model with 59xxx km on the clock, so it will be serviced via hyundai this thursday. Cost for the service, R3250

Getz - Very Good, Reliable Car, Parts and Services aren't as expensive as toyota. I would recommend the getz. Even though I personally have a Toyota Land Cruiser, But If I had the option between the two - Getz

Thanks, servicing is not cheap but at most likely once a year with SO's estimated mileage it's not too bad.

I agree about the jazz. They're awesome vehicles. Friend owns one and knocks the socks of my car in terms of fuel consumption and space. Gear changes are smoother than some luxury sedans on the CVT transmission. Not many go for sale in decent nick in Durban.

Honda's also last pretty long if taken care off. The lack of boot space made me move away from the Jazz many years ago but still excellent cars nonetheless.

I've driven both and i liked both but the yaris felt like it had more space for my 190cm bulk.

Jazz would be an excellent option as suggested above.

In terms of safety the Getz and Jazz are nowhere near as safe as the Yaris or Corsa. Both the later have excellent protection for adults, children as well as pedestrians. Personally I hate cars with centre console binnacles and the engines fitted to the Yaris line does not sound inspiring to me. But if you don't like German quality then settle for Japanese reliability and go with the Yaris.
