Having driven all 3, the corsa is miles ahead of the yaris and getz in terms of build quality, interior, specification, suspension, interior space. My sister has one. Its solid and reliable, and more than capable on the long road. Hers has been problem free and services are cheap.

My Yaris is 3 years old now and I average about 36 000km a year.

I'll visit dealerships and see what they have got to offer. I've only got my Saturday mornings free so it's a dealership a week then. A very painful process.

I've driven both Getz and Yaris. Preferred the Getz but can't account for what year and motor.

Isn't there maybe i20's going 2nd hand for that price range? AFAIK i20 is the newer equivalent to 1.6 Getz, though they can't be that new anymore surely.

No if it is around 80k it probably have issues or loads of kms , you could get decent i10 for the price range.

Agreed. Most good i20's are around R90K, so slightly above your budget. I saw a nice grey one on Autotrader, 70'000km and MY09 for around R90K

@OP, have you looked at the Suzuki Swift?

Swift is really good and sadly very underrated and overlooked. If I had to pick three it would be Corsa, Swift or i10.

Didn't see any Swift's. Only the Alto's which I wouldn't buy for her.

I'm afraid for that money you aren't going to get many meatier cars in Good condition for your wife, unless you look at older models but then reliability comes into play. For the money your best bet would be a Corsa as Roux suggested, or a Yaris as I have heard they are quite reliable and can be had for not too much ront. Good luck :)

The '13 Jazz we had was really unstable. Yaris is bulletproof - friend has one and it's going great... Getz is ok, not my favourite. As others have mentioned, Figo is brilliant

Yaris has a steel chassis, excellent brakes and fantastic economy (my 2008 1.3L 5 door gets 6.4L/100km in joziburg).

Friend has a getz. Feels like plastic.

EDIT: And it's a Toyota, which means it'll go forever.

So what cars dont have steel chassis?

I've driven the Figo and its a very nice car. All of them are out of my price range.

What do you guys think about the non-franchised dealers? I can get a car cheaper from them? Are they shady individuals or not?

I got my i30 from a non-franchised dealer and all seems fine so far.

Just check the car out very well, do the AA/Dekra checks for what it's worth (dealer should pay for this), make sure it has FSH, also maybe take the VIN number to an authorised dealer and check that it hasn't been in an accident or stolen and recovered, etc.

Good luck :)
