Hi guys, I'm hoping someone has experienced this before, and can guide me to figuring it out.

I got the Roku recently, after using Apple TV for a while. I am using Uno Telly for my DNS service, and everything was going smoothly. I wanted to be able to watch external content from time to time, so I got the Roku.

Now, having not read the manual on the Uno Telly site on how to set up the Roku, I went ahead and plugged it in, downloaded the firmware update (it requested it on first run), I created a Roku account (US region), linked the Roku, and I thought I was done.

Go back, browse channels and no Netflix or Hulu. After some searching and swearing, I go to the Uno Telly site, I half read the manual, then I proceed to change the DNS settings on my router (I had always done it via my pc's LAN settings and then just activated my IP if need be). I then reset the Roku to factory settings and still nothing. I unplugged it and held the reset button down, but still nothing.

So I read the Uno Telly manual properly, end to end, twice. I left the Roku on, I deleted my account and unpaired the Roku. I then restored it via the menu, and held the reset button in for 20 seconds. All while the Roku was still on and the network cable unplugged.

After the reset, I started again. Created a new account, linked the Roku, and still no luck.

I am really not sure what to do anymore.

Netflix works on Apple TV, and via my PC. Uno Telly is definitely working and active. Both my Roku account, and the Roku are set for the US region. On the Roku it's set manually. Just in case.

The only thing that's South African is my CC details.

Am I missing something gents? Do I have a $99 paper weight?

Your dns settings may not be set up properly on your router. First check that on the unotelly site. The quickstart page I had a similar problem untill I setup my router properly.

I'm pretty sure that they are. After I set the router to use the DNS settings, I set my PC lan to automatic, and connected to Netflix just fine, and Uno Telly said that my IP was active.

Maybe I should have renewed the IP with Uno Telly.

But I'll try all if it again later.

Just seems like a bit of a headache.

Remove your Unotelly settings from all other devices except for the router.
Reboot (or flush DNS cache on PC) and then test from the PC if your settings are correct.

I almost forgot I had to flush the dns before everything worked. It worked intermittently before then.

I didn't think of that. Thank you. Will try it out later.

Create your Roku account using a US VPN (Uno provides a trial one you can use). I couldn't get my account to register as a US account before doing this.

That was all done correctly. I did it on the pc that I use to activate my IP with Uno Telly. So with regards to that, I did that part correctly. I think it's just the Roku thats somehow not using the DNS values from the Router.

Before plugging your Roku in for the first time, you first need to get your UnoDNS service up and running. Make sure your router is configured correctly, and test from a PC to see if you can access the Netflix, Hulu and other region-blocked websites.

Once this is done, you then switch on your Roku, so that it receives the correct DNS settings the first time around, and thinks it is in the US. You then download whatever firmware updates it requests.

I think you did it the opposite way, and now the firmware on your Roku is the incorrect non-US version, which doesn't allow access to Netflix, Hulu and other services.

Try resetting your Roku again, and start everything from scratch. Register a new Roku account with a different email address if you have to. You should also register and access the Roku website once your UnoDNS is set up correctly. You need trick the Roku registration procedure into thinking you from the US as well.

Bottom line, do everything only once your UnoDNS is setup correctly. Verify by visiting the Netflix website from several devices on your network. If it is accessible, then your setup should be correct.

I think you're right :(

The problem is, is that it hasn't prompted for new firmware after I reset it manually. So I'm not sure how to initiate that firmware download again.

Will give this a try (apparently a secret screen), to see if I can somehow revert to factory default firmware.

Secret Screen (System Info, Resets, USB Test, Logging)

Home x5
Fast Forward x3
Rewind x2

As mentioned here you must have the UnoTelly DNS entry configured in your router before creating your Roku account. If not it will link the email address used for creating the Roku account to South Africa (even if you delete your Roku account and recreate it). To fix this after the UnoTelly DNS entry is configured in your router, delete the Roku account and create a new Roku account using a different email address. You will then see that Netflix is an option for you to add as a channel. You can then change the email address back to you original one used.

Hold on, on my Roku account setup (online, not on the device), I can choose channels?

Yes you can add channels via the website and it will download to the Roku. However it must still be a proper US account for the Netflix channel to be an option to install.

I'm logged in at the moment and I can't see any option to add channels. Would you mind taking a screenshot if you're able to?

Hi gents, still no luck.

I am most definitely connected to Uno Telly. I can browse to Netflix on my laptop, when I go to Uno Telly, I get the attached. I can also log in to my Netflix account no problem. I have reset the Roku, and re added my account. I have re downloaded the firmware via the secret screen. Still no luck. See attached for my screens, when I try add Netflix via the web, it says that my region isn't correct. Also, when I go to what is my ip, it still says that i am in SA.

Could that be the issue?

Did you connect to the VPN like I mentioned earlier? If so you should not be seeing your local IP.

Edit: Yes your ip will not change if you are only using the DNS service. That part is correct. Sounds like you need to connect using the Uno VPN and create a new Roku account.
