Did a lot of research looking for a bigger car. I ended up with the Everest xlt instead of the 2.4 Fortuner for 2 reasons. The seats that fold down whereas the new fortuner, you need to take the car to the dealer to have the seats removed. Too much admin. The sacrifice is depth in the boot and a slight angle of the boot due to the seats not being totally flat.

The other reason was the hijacking of Fortuners compared to Everests.

Thus far, quite happy with the Everest. Will be taking it on a road trip over Dec.

OP for that money you can buy a new Subaru XV or even the Forester.

Don't like the rounded boot. I've gotten use to the square shape of X-Trail and the space it offers for packing. On principle, I don't tow anything, if it doesn't fit in the boot it doesn't go.

Normal Tiguan maybe? At that price there should surely be a nicely specced demo or low mileage one in range.

Theft/Hijacking and the ECU bracket in the 2011+ models doesn't seem to help much.
Just like the Rolex Gang in Pretoria/Midrand there is a gang called the Hilux gang but they target either or Hilux/Fortuner.

Also a Fortuner is lazy as it tends to fall over easily and kill it's occupants

He would have to get the entry level spec Grandland X if wants to stay within his budget - and it doesn't look very nice in that spec level.
 
Unfortunately I'd stick to major brands (Toyota, VW, Ford) and avoid things I'd feel sorry to take into the bush (BMW, Audi)
 
I've got a Captiva and a Mokka X - love em both... but prefer the Mokka. Plenty of space for the four of us and it's got all the bells and whistles.
