So over the weekend my trusty X-Trail's aircon decided that it's had enough and now only works full blast or not at all, there's no in between, and it isn't happy about that either as it doesn't stop whining/screeching/rattling while doing so.

Got it booked in for a service/repair as we are going on holiday next week only to be told that it's about time I start thinking about getting the gearbox replaced as well.

This is all after I had to have the clutch replaced at the end of last year which was a rather unexpected R25k.

8 years on and 220,000km's later I think it may actually now just be time to replace and move on.

So I come to all you petrolheads for advice as I've been wracking my brain and listening to opinions but there is very little consensus.

The specifications:

I like the shape of my current X-Trail, it works great with having two kids and being able to transport everything that needs be. I had previously looked at the newer X-Trail but don't like the more rounded shape of it, specifically the boot.

I've been thinking of getting a Fortuner, Everest or MU-X as the replacement ideally below 15,000km's. I'm open to suggestions though. Would prefer automatic and don't need full 4x4.

Budget would be in the region of R400k.

Did some further investigation, leaning more towards the Everest at this point.

Firstly I prefer the seats collapsing into the boot instead of hanging there like in the Fortuner. Secondly, there's a marked difference in price between the Everest XLT vs the Fortuner 2.8 range.

Then lastly my brother in law works for Ford so he's going to try and see what he can do on the price.

The mu-X seems way over priced for this segment and I also looked at the Pajero Sport but I just can't like those lights at the back.

what about a toyota rush/avanza?

Did look at the Rush, thinking its a bit small for my intentions

Don't like the rounded boot. I've gotten use to the square shape of X-Trail and the space it offers for packing. On principle, I don't tow anything, if it doesn't fit in the boot it doesn't go.

Kuga (facelift)

Um, no :)

Tiguan Allspace

Nice but unfortunately creeping up in price again. My ideal budget is R400k, R450k at a push.

Well the correct answer is get a station wagon but no-one listens to that one so...
Sounds like your mind is already made up; the Everest looks a solid buy, nicer interior than the Fortuner, Toyota is probably more hardy with a better resale.
If you don't need 7 seats then the Forester/ Outback come into play. Second hand Forester will come in well below your budget but there's not many for sale. Beyond that, test drive the ones you like

Mind isn't made up as yet. I'm still quite partial to the Fortuner apart from the price difference to the Everest and the fact that my wife views it as a dangerous buy (hijackings)

Suv? Nooooo

Why not get a Stagea?

Fortuner's are high risk rather the Everest 2.2, Pajero, Forster/Outback

You say Fortuner is high risk, but there are literally tens of thousands sold, so what is your risk really?

Versus a much less common SUV?
