This is all after I had to have the clutch replaced at the end of last year which was a rather unexpected R25k.

Was that through a stealership?!
I just replaced the clutch on my Kia Cerato for R2200.
How the heck do they arrive at R25K for a clutch replacement even if it involved replacing a fancy flywheel?

Nah, had it all over the place. Got 4 quotes between the dealership, car service city, a clutch place and a friend.

The X-Trail uses some dual fly-wheel setup that requires extra labour and makes the part expensive.

Ah ... you probably mean a DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel).
Still flipping expensive IMO.
