Yokohama for new tyres?

There's so little between all these cars that they actually mean nothing in the general equation, and especially not on straight pieces of road.

If you want to really settle these things I say it should work something like that.

A in A's own car vs B in B's own car do a 5 Lap Race around Killarney (or any other track).

then

A in B's car vs B in A's car with another 5 LAP Race.


If one driver wins both races...well there's your answer.

If each driver wins a race...then neither car is really better than the other.

lol. You wanna know something? In 6 years I have never topped up with oil other than when it was serviced. And as I have white tiles on my garage floor I can tell you straight away that zero oil leaks. And no mechanical problems other than the car losing power after two weeks - turned out it was a loose connection that took a whole 5 seconds to fix after the car was towed in :)

But lets not hijack this thread ;)

I have thrashed a number of gti's in a straight line :). My car is stock by the way.

And the OPC is a second or two quicker than Gti around tracks generally.

A Gti is a good compromise, but it aint a "real" hatchback :)

Local support is bad. Service centres are bad too, the 'new' MG and the MG6 cars they bringing in....well, I was told 'we dont maintain/service older generations...just the new MG6'. Lovely. MG6 - a farkin ugly car IMO...

Anyways...love my car...has its problems but when its going...a pleasure to drive! I still get comments about what a lekker car it is...moreso here than in Jhb.

I do the minor service myself, and the odd thing here and there like spark plugs (which Im changing this weekend). There is a place that services 'older' MG's like mine...but like any 'dealership' its a huuuuge ripoff. For the major service Im gonna try a different place this time, they are a bit cheaper than the dealerships.

Like I said...an awesome car, love her to bits...but I dont recommend them unless you have patience with parts and dont mind spending a bit on service/parts (unless you do it yourself) ;)

Yep, they have moved though. Regard them as a dealer as its dealer prices...hence my ripoff comment. No offense if you work there...

The other pace I want to try is near Durbanville...they collect your car and return it, all in the price. I was quoted a job by them...it worked out cheaper by about 15%. Sure..its not much...but it was cheaper and they picked up and returned your car...thats a bonus. So ja...def will try them for my major service when it comes

Kuhmo's aren't too bad.
The original Kuhmo KH17's on my Cerato are now at 62,400km and I haven't exactly been treating them nicely.
I'll get about another 10,000km out of them so I'm quite happy with 70,000km per set.
I'll probably try Toyo Proxes C1S on the next set.

Also had good service from Hankook Ventus V12's.

My point was that moering a car in a straight line can be done by any knob and does not a great driver make.

And the OPC is a second or two quicker than Gti around tracks generally.

Sure enough in the hands of the same driver I wouldn't be surprised...all that plastic makes it super lightweight.

Your point is wrong. Same car, different people driving in a straight line will yield different results. There is still skill involved; especially at take off.

Your Gti is still thrashed on a track, and I think the OPC is about the same weight as your lump of compromise.

Hey, if the car claims to be a hot hatch those are the standards it needs to live up to ;)

And don't get grumpy doll just because you got presented with the facts of life :)
 
I had the Yokohama S-Drive tyres on my previous car. Loved them, but hard to get stock. (and expensive)

The Conti Sport Contact... You can usually get them on "special" at TWT. They are just loud. When I replaced the Sport Contact-3 tyres, the first thing I noticed is how much quieter it was inside the car on the way home. Also, I used to drive on a 1km dirt road to my house every day. Lived there for over 3 years at the time with no punctures. On the Sport Contact-3, on a set of 4 tyres, I had to replace 3 of them due to punctures on the side.
With all that said though... on my current car, the GTI 6, it came out with Conti Sport Contact 2s (18"), and I got 30000km on the front and 40000km on the rear wheels... the best figures since my Golf 2. I usually only got around 25000km on a set.

When I had to replace the above, I looked for Yokohama S-Drive first, but it was either hard to get stock or ridiculously expensive... so I settled for Hankook after reading some good reviews. It may not be the best of the best, but it is good value for money. I actually prefer it over the Conti Sport.
 
Well, no Yoki's anywhere. So ja...not wanting to try others again as I havent realy been happy with Continetal or Bridgestone...will look at the Hankook tyres
 
The model matters a lot. Check tirerack.com for model ratings and reviews

Yoko S-drives and Kumho ASX are good tyres although the brands aren't the best (here anyway)

Also if you look on the sidewall you should see 4 digits indicating the year of manufacture

2605 means week 26 2005
