Your Average latency these days

Bear in mind that the following is from an EU perspective :

While contention ratios probably are contributing to the poor latency... I've found that the true source of evil is Telkom routing.

Playing for over a year now, I used to get 250-300ms on a shaped 192kb line.

I've since upgraded to the 'best' - Hopping that the more expensive accounts at Telkom get better ratios... hence better latency.

In the end it all comes down to routing tho. This **** all started in April this year... I remember during a 3 week period there were many active posts about latency issues... numerous on webafrica's notice board too... in the end the only difference most people found was that instead of routing direction to London we went through NY via Hong Kong some how.

Every now and again my latency plummels to awesome levels... and everytime a quick tracert on the eu login ip reveals a brilliant response, it never lasts tho... few minutes really then back thro NY :(
 
Last night I signed in just for the heck of it on my local only account (which had international connectivity :) ) and my latency was 21442 ms :P

hahahaha Everything was extremely delayed :P
 
Try this if you have an unshaped account. Logon and quickly look at your latency. Provided its not 0ms, it should be the latency you would get without port shaping. Yet it rises quickly, and increases by usually 300-400ms before leveling out at a constant. That means Telkom are (drastically) shaping unshaped accounts. But we know this already, along with all the other crimes they perform on a daily basis. WTB Scorpions :mad: or Dexter the righteous serial killer.
 
Latency over the weekend was hectic :( Getting around 800 - 900 ms. Blaming the weather for now, just hope it improves soon
 
700-1200 still...

Even that WoWVPN gets the exact same pings as unshaped (US realm). There no-one that can give us an answer as to why it has degraded so much? Tried phoning ISP again with no luck - Still 100% sure it is SAIX or a link somewhere higher up in the chain...
 
Has anyone contacted telkom/saix yet? I am sure it is a telkom related issue as all telkom/saix unshapped and regular accounts have experienced this degradation!
 
Its not telkom. do a tracert to the logon servers then you will see its leaving SA with fine latency. Its somewhere higher up.
 
when ever we log a fault with SAIX about this they say "pings are fine, no issue" although you can not test it with pings.
 
Not so great for some of us, makes fights like archimonde very difficult. Even at 500ms you are a potential burden to the raid unless you have very fast reflexes and some luck

im lucky if i get sub 700ms normally these days i cant play as im constantly over 1500+
 
I would be keen to know what the costs are for such a service etc.
if it is true that you will get better ping times then i will definatly give this a trail to see how it goes... as soon as i have moved into my new place that is hehehe

Well, if IS decide to use their own hardware that would at least give us another option. We have SAIX and Verizon unshaped atm, adding a third option could just heat things up a bit.

Whats good to see is that ISP's are recognizing the need for low latency connections aimed at gaming. Lets hope they manage to get some kind of routing or some way to bypass most of Telkoms speed hurdles.
 
Hmm all depends on what there definition of low latency is. IS is appalling so even if they half it they might still be behind some of the other current offerings and shaped during office hrs wtf.

But we live in hope!

IMO the reason why you all getting such awful latency is becos of the new patch, that new thingy they added to the patch which is like vent is eating all the bandwith up.Blizzard need to fix this for international users cos its not only just us folks complaining about the poor MS.
 
I have been sitting at latencies around 800-1000ms. I have a 384 line with a telkom 3GB shaped account. What i have been experiancing lately however are constant disconnects. Will be on for 15 - 30 min and then it just starts spiking with huge lag and i get disconnected. When i rejoin i get about another 800 - 1000 ms for about 15 -30 min and the same thing happens. Its pretty cyclical.

Any ideas on what may be causing this anyone?

On a side note, if i am playing dota on the local server, i seem to get spikes and dc's as well after 15-30 min play. This is all very recent these problems of disconnecting.

Anyone have any ideas, what may cause this?
