Your HDD could be slowing you down

I hear you... but at this stage of the game I need space over speed.
 
I can say its true that Raid 0 is faster...

Now that i actually think about it i had a pc which had 4 80gig drives it worked like a dream especially if you are doing video editing...
 
Raid 0 is much better than tha running a stock drive. Still though it won't help speed up your pc in terms of opening programs and what not because it does not change the time it takes your drive to respond.

That depends on what you're doing.

Take for example motion effects rendering in high def or SD video. For that a fast processor (with as many cores as possible) and a multi-thread aware codec and OS are MORE important than fast disk IO. As is sequential reads and writes are fast enough for such editing unless you're working in UNCOMPRESSED HD.

SSDs are still expensive I think. When they become cheaper and by that I mean Intel controller SSDs become cheaper - since the others are fast but sub-standard for what the technology is capable of, I'll agree with you. That moment will come but right now HDD is still king for most use, otherwise there are also SCSI HDDs.

Your complaining about SSd's being expensive but go on about scsi. Ok then i guess scsi is not very expensive either hey :). O wait...

I will say it again, go read before you think outloud about SSD's because your clueless in regards to ssd's. Your still stuck on jmicron and intel when companies like g.skill and ocz have ssd's cheaper than intel, high capacity and make the transfer rates on intel ssd's look old.

nothing i hate reading more than informed posts and peter you should get more informed before about ssd's bud.
 
Increasing memory will speed up your system more than faster disks.

BTW, speeding up disk only helps if disk access is the bottleneck. I'd suggest you find out where the bottleneck is, before fixing the wrong problem.

Once you have reached the limit of memory in your OS, then look at RAID, provided that it is your disk that is slowing you down.
 
Okay so I have an aging 80GB Seagate C drive. I have a 250GB D drive running 8MB cache and 7200rpm. I need to replace the C drive for under R1.2k. What should I get?
 
Well your c:\ should not be a massive drive, your c:\ drive should be an 80gb or 160gb hdd that you use only for windows.

Correct but my D drive is a bit small at 250GB. So move D drive to C drive and replace D drive with 1TB?

Yip, that's what I do. You actually want your OS to resided on your fastest drive but no biggie.
