Not necessarily. I would say it depends on what your needs are - and which 1D body.

I do mainly sport where I need (like) quick AF and fast fps. I was talking about both.

Is this good or bad? I mean, do you mean the 40D's result is sufficient for what you do or you find it lacking?
The 40D/50D's AF is pretty good as far as enthusiast-level cameras go, but I think you'd find it lacking if you're used to a 1D

That photo was taken with a 500/4 on a 40D. Considering the 'out of camera' image it was almost perfect (to my expectation).
Considering the value of the equipment, one could argue that from a hobbyist opinion it may not be worthwhile to fork out 20K for a mk3 or 10K for a mk2 if you can pick up a 40D with grip for 6.5K. Thats what I am trying to get to.

That's what I thought but I had to ask
bwana used to take pics like that with his 400D...I'm with you. I had a 40D. I chose it over the 400D at the time because I prefer the bigger grip and being somewhat heavy on kit, i thought the better build quality and environmental protection would probably be a good idea. I would still have had the 40D if someone didn't walk off with my bag. So I have the 50D now and that does fine.
But there are things that some of the higher-end bodies have that I really wished I had. Spot metering that follows the active focus point, for example - this would make a lot of the shooting I do a lot easier.

That reminds me - Microsoft's ICE is pretty decent if you're looking for a free and easy way to stitch together panos.

I'm actually selling one of my 400Ds with the 28-300 (my first foray into the forum classifieds) - I had a long hard look at the gear I have and have decided there's redundancy and then there is excessive redundancy.

With ICE it pretty much sums up the software I use - ACDSee and ICE. I suppose you can call me El-Cheapo 
Turns out it's very close. I calibrated it with the spyder as a second monitor on my mac and compared the same photo and it was almost spot on so no worries on that front.

Aperture. I love this software. I shoot with an Olympus E-PL1.
Why?
Just because I am so use to it had it for years, but lightroom is good too for viewing, just a habit I guess.
