Your Raspberry Pi Projects

At this stage we're still pushing out Pi 3B+ and we need to find solutions and complete testing before stocks run out of the Pi 3B+.
Don't think you need to worry about that. Pi Foundation has a (bad) habit of keeping old models alive. I think you the original was only retired recently.
 
Local suppliers aren't stocking them - 3Bs are like hens teeth here at the mo. Overseas... not sure.
Yeah, our local supplier will only be getting stock of the 3B+ in March 2020 hopefully. Luckily we still have some in stock. Normally we purchase like 50 or 60 units at a time.
 
That's pretty cool.

I just put in an order for a couple ss relays, a waterproof temp sensor and some other bits & bobs. :unsure:
 
Feedback on the Flirc case - it's running 9 degrees cooler than without o_O
And update your Pi 4 firmware - they made a significant update that allows it to run a couple of degrees cooler.
Erm... How does one do that?

edit: Nevermind I see it's something I already did. I just din't realise the update / upgrade command(s) affected the firmware as well.

So, today I got to spend a few minutes mocking up a DS18B20 to my pi4 and running CraftbeerPi.
Took a few [very unscientific] measurements to see what's what.

I also have two SS relays which will be wired up to the heating element of my urn, and a brew pump- once I've acquired the pump.

I need to figure out how to plumb the thermometer into the urn. Was thinking either going the thermowell route, or making some other plan.

No doubt it would, and if it comes down to it, I guess I'll purchase a new one like that. But since I already have a waterproof DS18B20, I was hoping to make the best of it. What I'm looking for is that mounting hardware so I can use my existing one.
 
Has anyone here tried powering a Pi4 via the USB ports commonly found on some routers?

I used to power my previous Pi3 from the USB port on the back of my B315, but the 4 probably has higher power draw and I would assume could have instability issues.

Depends on the power rating of that USB port. I would've said definitely not, but if you were powering a Pi 3 then it may be quite high-powered already.

How does the thermometer "talk" to the Pi? I also have a thermometer project in mind.

I ordered a Pi 3B+ from PiShop as I would rather stick to a model that I can guarantee will work. The Pi 4 has quite a bit higher power draw and while I think it would work fine @ idle, I suspect the initial boot up sequence will be too much and cause issues.
 
A quick update from dhbrown - his dad is now using the player and it sounds positive. I'm compiling full details of the build and will be posting either in here, or in another thread with a link in here.

Anyone here powering their Pi with a Powerbank?

One day in the hopefully not too distant future when our Fibre is lit, I will get rid of Telkom and the B315 so I was thinking of powering the Pi through a 10'000mAh power bank. The Adata PT100 states that it can do charging and discharging at the same time, but the auto shut-off has me concerned as I doubt a headless Pi will pull enough current to register on the powerbank.

I have before , but only for testing not as a permanent thing, if you get it working as a sort of UPS please share.

The pi3 complains(or Rasbian rather) about low voltage, the guys at Micro Robotics reckon that it is because it is expecting just over 5v, ie.5.1v or so, and the powerbank is giving out 5v exactly, not sure though.

But it runs very happily as do its older friends and the orange pi's.

I also read something about the Pi expecting 5.1v and most powerbanks supplying 4.8-5.0v on average.

I'm keen to see if I'll be able to power the Pi and maybe a 2.5" external HDD from it in which case I'll turn it into a portable media server of sorts.

I already have my Unifi AP, Edgerouter and B315 running off a Gizzu UPS and my intention is to make my entire setup LS-proof. All the Pi needs to run is the Unifi Controller, Dynamic DNS updated via crontab, PiHole and if the HDD idea works, an SMB server. It will be headless so power draw ought to be small although with the HDD I have my doubts
