FNB Pay adds Zapper support

FNB has announced its customers can now use the FNB Pay Scan to Pay feature on their banking apps to make contactless payments at Zapper-enabled merchants across the country.

Zapper QR code payments are the latest digital contactless payment to be added to FNB Pay.

We had this, then they took it away, then they added it again, and I'm still not sure if I've ever used it.

Didn't work with standard bank virtual card in my case.
There was no option to delete my zapper account.

not a fan of FNB at all, but in their defence they didn't take it away, Zapper stopped supporting MasterPass compatibility so all payment apps that relied on that to handle Zapper & SnapScan & standard MasterPass transactions suddenly had to re-implement Zapper separately

bit of an own goal from Zapper imo, highly doubt it forced many more people to start using their app which was the point of it all, and in the meantime they missed out on transactions they would've gotten previously

I've used scan-to-pay quite a few times, mostly at weekend food markets where it is often the only option other than paying with cash (although Yoco has started changing that), can live without it, but it is convenient when you need it

Fixed.

The way it's "reported" sounds like an advert.

Actual news would highlight the fact that Zapper isn't new to FNB...

Que? Masterpass wanted to act like a middleman.

“The nature of the interoperability forces the apps that want to participate in Masterpass QR codes to process transactions the way Masterpass wants to process transactions,” White told Hypertext.

By taking this approach it prevents the application’s owner from working directly with the merchant and that hits the app in the pocket.

well yes, that's how the big card networks operate, how's that new?

you want to process credit card transactions on the MasterCard network? you play by their rules
you want to process QR transactions via MasterPass? you play by their rules

the benefit you get in return is reach that you would never achieve by yourself i.e. every single bank that offers scan-to-pay will do it via MasterPass first, given it is a standard and has the widest reach

you choose to go it alone at your peril
