ZERO%: New bill to ban drunk driving

Cough medication with an alcohol content is a legal substance and there is no prohibition on driving while taking it.

Uber, or any of the other tons of taxi or drive you home services. If you don't use these all you are saying is you value others lives less than the few bucks it costs to get home safely.

I do however agree this is a stupid idea. Just enforce the existing law properly and most of this issue will go away

If it gives you a blood alcohol level above 0% then there is if they implement this daft change.

How are you going to explain that to the traffic cops abiding to a zero level (limit) as per the National Road Traffic Amendment. You will have to test this argument in court as the traffic cops are simply doing their job. Due to this discrepancy a drunk can argue to be under the influence of a legal substance, thanks to the zero level amendment, so yes this will be tested and before it is tested the Bill needs to be approved.
 
This can backfire. Many people will decide that since they can't even have one drink they may as well drink as much as they want since they'll be arrested whether they have one drink or a dozen. Net effect - probably slightly fewer but considerably drunker drivers.
 
More idiotic laws designed to exploit the innocent rather than apprehend the guilty.

Just leave it as is and enforce it properly...
 
Ja, the problem is not the limit, it is the enforcement of the limit and the subsequent process of the justice system.

This country's enforcement and justice system is in an absolute shambles.

There is that effect as well.. I hadn't considered that.

I often go to the pub and have 2 drinks over 2 or 3 hours.... if I do that now, I'm over the limit.. so I may as well just get monumentally shytefaced.. same net effect.

But the blood work lab backlogs makes most of even the prosecutable cases fall through the cracks. At 0% I would hope they would only need prove you were under the influence with no regard for how x you were over and they can get through the cop process chop chop. Tony Yengeni is being prosecuted for drunken driving and how many years had that case been going on? And he's just unlucky because he's prominent otherwise a lot of these drunk drivers pay a spot fine and the case disappears.

Nope, a breath test is not admissible in court, it will still need to go to the blood lab, even though the % would no long matter.

How do you prove that someone is under the influence? Without the blood work, that is?

In this case you have a point to prove which may produce an unasked result, lives and damage to others, incl. your own. This is irresponsible.

I am aware its irresponsible... its more a hypothetical thing...

I am very much against drinking and driving over the limit. I currently enjoy going to the pub once or twice a week and having 2 drinks then going home.... This legislation, if its passed, will kill that instantly.. so how much tax will the government lose due to the local pubs all closing, and bigger pubs seeing reduced business.

They can not enforce the laws they have now .
Wast of time .
 
BS law. There are perfectly sober cants on the road who just don't give fek about road safety.

They should spend more time dealing with them.
