If they are under the limit, then why must they suffer?

What makes this 0% limit, any different from the old limit. What scientifically has changed to show that this new limit is any safer than the old one?

There is no need to prove that it is scientifically safer. If it results in less consumption of alcohol or less road accidents, then it was worth it

Spent 5 weeks on Aus in Dec. There if you go to a work function, you call a taxi and they transport you there and back - R50

How would you prove that it results in less road accidents if the current laws aren't enforced properly?

But it won't result in less road accidents...

They don't enforce the current laws, so that could make it whatever value they wanted and it won't change things.

Geez, all that the government does is make new laws, without addressing the enforcement or understanding how they actually need to be implemented. They are just lazy - make a new law, and it means that you are doing your job - the easy way out. Normally all that they do is look at other 1sy work countries, and just copy and paste.

So if you had a beer the night before, or there was some red wine in the sauce on your steak and there is 0.000000001% alcohol in your system you can't drive?

They can't use absolute zero, because that isn't a reality. There always has to be an actual limit, against which the equipment must be able to measure.

I don't know many people anymore that still drink and drive. So it seems that behaviour is changing rapidly.
We just need to accelerate the change

I know many people who drink, drive and bribe cops. Also, it seems instances of corrupt cops who allegedly demand bribes are on the increase.

You more than likely do still know people that drink and drive.... they just don't talk about it...

I can almost bet you know a lot of people who will happily go and have 1 or 2 drinks and then call it quits, because they're under the limit and perfectly safe to drive... now they will deemed not to be safe.

Absolutely nothing. In fact, long term stats from the US show that there is no statistically significant decline in the accident rate after the limit is dropped below 0.08mg/100ml. So at legal limits of 0.08mg/100ml, 0.05mg/100ml and 0.02mg/100ml nothing much changes statistically. I don't think they have any 0% states though. I'll see if I can find the source, but it's not a fact they like to advertise because it means anything below the old 0.08mg/100ml limit is pointless from a public safety point of view.

Because what's the point of introducing new laws to reduce the incidence of drunken driving and therefore also the amount of accidents on the road if you can't prove that the reduction in road fatalities is a result of the new law?

Whatever happened to evidenced based policy making?

Joburg I assume?
Trying to bribe a police officer in Cape Town would be a bad idea (Not saying there are zero corrupt cops here, just that there are so few you wouldn't even think of trying a bribe). I have never even heard of someone trying :)
