Zero-rated Android upgrades in the pipeline

Title is misleading.. It only covers HTC devices, not my Milestone for example...

(And Motorola have taken the approach of simply warnig about the update size and recommending that you use WiFi...)
 
Bwahaha Leaf is such a farken joke! Excuses excuses and more excuses! If you're so worried about the customer paying for the firmware make it freely available at retail outlets. Person brings phone to Vodashop/Mtnshop 5minutes later he walks out with froyo or do they want to cover the petrol aswell?

Its obviously nice if they don't want customers to incur data costs but don't keep paying customers from keeping their handsets up to date, make a plan while you're still busy playing with agreements that should have been in place when you decided to distribute the handset. Or did you think that google would not bring out any more updates for android? You were aware when you started distributing that there will be firmware updates!
 
To be honest, I think this is the best outcome possible. Sure, it could have been quicker - but this is a first for operators in SA (who need time to implement the solution), and will pave the way for free OTA updates in the future.

As reported, Leigh said that from Google's perspective, OTA is the only way. He also confirmed that they tried to do exactly as you suggest, but weren't able to because it doesn't fit into Google's vision for Android.

OTA or bust, is what it sounds like.

Noted. I'll try to be more specific in future, word count permitting. Samsung have also indicated (in passing, though, I don't think it's cast in stone) that they'll take a similar approach to Motorola's.
 
That's really interesting leaf dude. My Desire popped up a message on Monday asking me if I wanted to upgrade. It was even polite enough to ask if I wanted to wait until I was on WiFi.

My phone was bought from Vodacom a month ago and is now running 2.2, perfectly legitimately, thanks to an OTA upgrade.

The excuses given are lame

Guys, just root your phone and load a custom ROM.

I hope LEAF and Quinton reads this forum to see what people think of their pathetic excuse of a company.

Lame lame lame lame FAIL excuse.

The update first copies the entire rom over to your phone, THEN it flashes it. With OTA it works exactly the same, if your phone looses power during the actual flash step you can brick your phone. Same with the PC.

That is a very weak excuse.

Anyway, can't wait to load Froyo on my G1 :) (and no, not thanks to leaf)
 
I think this is a great effort by Leaf, although I'm not sure why it's only becoming an issue with Froyo - what happened with previous updates like 2.1 Eclair, released earlier in the year?

Owners of HTC phones can be grateful that they're not dependant on the operators (Vodacom, MTN, etc) for their upgrades; I have a Nokia 5800 and I'm at Vodacom's mercy when it comes to firmware upgrades - some they skip, and even those we get are months after their release from Nokia.

What a load of BS - if an Android user in SA doesn't want to use his/her mobile broadband bandwidth, they can also connect to wired Internet bandwidth - sure it's not as cheap, but it's perfectly acceptable for a few hundred meg.

I'm on MTN and haven't been able to do an ota upgrade - is it maybe just Vodacom?
 
They are busy trying to fill the update with malware and spyware.
 
hmm i wonder how those guys got the updates early.. oh i know. they rooted there device and changed the update server to the USA. :)

Its all well and good that leaf don't want to charge us :)

But when will we get the update? Hopefully before Gingerbread is released. :P
 
Have any of you rooted your Hero yet? We are having difficulty and it seems as if it has got something to do with Leafs custom firmware. There plenty different ways to do it but all have failed for us so far.

Yup. Running 2.2 on my hero for over 2 weeks now.
