Zest T1

This morning updated my Zest T1 with the latest OTA. Seems to still be running well. Internet operations are generally quite fast and efficient on it. I've decided it's a great 2nd phone, Android internet tablet and 3G hotspot. For R2000 with the data deal it's great value for money as that.

As a primary phone, the phone part of it has been unstable. That's exacerbated by me using the 3G on MTN and 2G on Cell C. Cell C has a great 3G network, but not a great 2G network. So I'm using my Lumia 520 as a primary phone and this Zest T1 as a secondary.

I ordered my Zest T1 over the weekend and got it yesterday... I admit, reading this thread whilst waiting for it to arrive made me a bit anxious. I've been using a Samsung Galaxy Pocket for the past two years and figured I could use an upgrade. Considering I paid R900 for it (and its selling for R800 or so now), I would say that I got a good deal getting the Zest promotion. I haven't looked into how much the data alone would have cost, but its safe to say I put in maybe R600 extra over the Pocket to get a Zest? I think the specs the Zest gives is worth more than R600?

I'm very happy so far, but I want to test out Google Maps and see if it crashes etc.

The partitioning is the only things I am battling with - Has anyone managed to get theirs repartitioned? I see Zest Mobile is doing repartitioning (I might have missed some stuff whilst sifting the thread, but I don't think I read anywhere about how to get your device repartitioned).

In my opinion you won't go wrong with the T1, it's a descent phone and good value for money. I think the reason this thread could be so intimidating is because most of the 1.5% of unhappy customers are frequenting this thread while only a small handful of happy customers ever posted here.

I use Google maps for reference quite often and have not had any issues or force closes, but I have not used the navigation all that much. But I am now curious about that since I have not had any other issues, so I will also test the navigation some more with both Google maps and Waze.

Your statement is correct. I really like my Zest T1.

However, the people posting in here are on the side of Zest. If not, then why all the effort to have things fixed? We're not special. But what we (or maybe its just me) is trying to do is help better this product and the service the company delivers, trying to make sure other users get a good experience. This is about the future of an African startup.

I admit, we feel a bit upset about it, because no one wants a defective (or slightly problematic) device. But it does not change that fact that we bought it. We wanted it. There were some promises made, and there is still time for them to come true.

1.5% device failure does not count for the other percentages of "bugs" with the device.

You get what you pay for. They owe us nothing more. But if they want to make an impact (like their mission states), they will have to at least try and better their approach.

This is one thing i don't understand, how can identical devices have different issues, i myself like many others on this forums work in the technology industry, one of my main responsibilities is ghosting/replication, i have build images for more than 50000 machines in my life, and one thing i can tell you is, if you have 2 devices with identical hardware, you clone the hard-drives with an identical image, if the one machine works and the other one does not work, its a hardware fault, simple as that, no amount of software tweaks or firmware updates will or can fix that.
I cannot see how cellphones can differ in any way.

Can only be Gremlins :D

I really do like this phone. The value for money is amazing, especially when taking the data deal into consideration.

The device has great potential.
Bugs are a part of life in the tech world, particularly for a new product, so it's understandable that they'd exist.

I think only the partitioning was a huge mistake, because after all the system apps and necessary everyday apps, you're left with very little space to use the hardware on this phone. As an example, it has enough power to play a large number of games etc, it doesn't really have the space for them though.

Zest's response has been rather worrying. They're either silent or ultra defensive.
We aren't being critical because we want them to fail, we're being critical because we bought into this and want them to succeed. They should understand that.

As a side note, it has been more than 48 hours since @Zestmobile has made a public statement on this post 09 July 2014 10:10, and last seen on Facebook 10 July 2014 20:38

100% agree with you, Nekuro.

To add, as Zest Mobile's first deviced, I am very impressed. I don't mind working through the teething process - Hell, I don't even mind a bit of silence in communication just before a patch launch whilst everyone is channeling their energies to the patch - but in the end, we want to see them succeed (its why we bought into the deal in the first place, right?) and our feedback will help them with that. Its up to them what they do with the feedback. Hopefully they do the right things. :D

I can report first hand that the T1 has excellent aerodynamic properties after trying to book airline tickets over the phone and only being able to complete the transaction after 5 attempts after various disconnections....

Aerodynamics - Check! :p

Hi there

Now that I have installed the update, I am getting the following message:

"Unfortunately, the process .com.google.process.gapps has stopped"
"Unfortunately Google Play services has stopped"
as well as

"Unfortunately x app has stopped"

This affects:
Google Play
Whatsapp
Twitter
Yahoo Mail
Any.do

and others but those are the key ones I have checked.

Can anyone advise on what to do? It feels that my phone is no longer functioning as a smartphone

How much free memory do you have left?
Have you restarted your device since then?

I got that right after the update, but after clearing some space on internal storage (by removing unwanted bundled apps) and rebooting the pop-ups stopped.

Thanks, haven't had the issue since doing that!

Got the new OTA.
Unbelievable amount of crap came with it. (Blackberry app, Facebook App etc) It took a while to uninstall all the unwanted rubbish due to the constant error messages that came up (probably due to no space available). After moving all the apps from internal memory, there was some space free.

Restarted the phone, Installed all the updates and it seems if it was working!

YouTube was working perfect. No problem - streams without lag.
Google Maps was not freezing anymore. searching etc was working.
Navigation in Google maps is not working, it quits the moment there is message, email or any other notification. If you re-open the maps, you need to re-input the destination all over again.

Overall this OTA was not that bad. Need some work though:
-The navigation part of maps (please do not quit if a message is received)
-Please keep the unwanted Apps to a minimum
-Sort out the partitioning
