Takealot testing new service in three cities

Takealot has announced the launch of a new instant-delivery pilot in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town called “Get it Now”, powered by TakealotNOW and fulfilled via Mr D.

South Africa’s largest online retailer said consumers can now receive their orders in minutes with the new service.

This follows the company’s successful pilot of TakealotNOW, which first launched over two years ago.

Takealot first started testing the service in August 2023, allowing Mr D users in areas like Durbanville, Bellville, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Kuilsriver and Parow to take it for a spin.

It expanded TakealotNOW to Cape Town’s central suburbs in May 2024 and launched it in Pretoria on 1 August 2024.

Customers can shop for a wide range of products, including beauty essentials, toys, smartphones, laptops, and alternative energy products.

The TakealotNow service was previously only available through a dedicated tab in the Mr D app, and Mr D CEO Alex Worz said at the time that the expansion marked an exciting milestone for the group.

“It’s evident that our customers appreciate the speed of delivery and convenience of TakealotNow,” said Takealot Group CEO Frederik Zietsman.

“In an industry primarily focused on groceries, we’ve pioneered a shift by offering on-demand delivery on a diverse range of products.”

Zietsman said South African consumers are getting increasingly used to receiving deliveries in under an hour, adding that these types of deliveries don’t cost Takealot any more than its standard courier pricing.

He said the move aligns with Takealot’s strategy to grow its e-commerce offering through customer-centric services, adding that there is still massive potential for digital commerce in South Africa.

Zietsman said local customers aren’t served particularly well, presenting a great opportunity for Takealot. He said the company expects varying demands from different areas, which it will tailor its services to meet.

“The assortment of products in a township may look completely different from what is available in an urban area,” said Zietsman.

“We are excited because of the customised, nuanced model where consumer demand dictates product ranges instead of being offered everything you think they want to buy.”

Takealot chief marketing officer Karla Levick said that together with Mr D, they were building the ultimate e-commerce ecosystem that understands what makes South Africans happy.

“And nothing delivers happiness quite like getting what you need, when you need it most, all in minutes,” she said.

“We’ve always focused on making shopping simpler, faster, and happier for our customers, and this interaction brings that promise to life in a meaningful way.”

TakealotNOW head Marnus Engelbrecht said that they pioneered on-demand delivery for general merchandise in South Africa in 2023, proving South Africans want the same access to instant convenience.

“While this is an early stage of the rollout, we’re thrilled to deliver happiness faster and will continue to expand our capabilities over time,” said Engelbrecht.
