OpenView HD is currently running a promotion, giving away R5,000 each day until it reaches 1,000,000 homes.
The subscription-free satellite TV service said it is currently sitting at just over 977,000 set-top box activations.
In May, OpenView said it had passed 825,000 activations – a growth of 112% on the number of activations from the previous year.
Reaching 1 million
OpenView HD launched in October 2013, offering a “free forever” satellite TV service where you only pay the once-off cost of a decoder.
At launch, its cheapest decoders had a recommended retail price of R999. Including the dish and installation, the once-off cost came to between R1,499 and R1,699.
New decoders are now priced from R399.
A timeline of OpenView HD’s subscriber growth is detailed below.
- October 2013 – Launch
- July 2014 – 37,606 households
- August 2015 – 200,000 activations
- February 2016 – 350,000 activations
- May 2016 – 388,812 activations
- May 2017 – 825,000 activations
To enter OpenView HD’s million activation competition, you need to buy a new decoder and text the STB number on the back to 33103.
This makes you eligible for the R5,000 daily prize. If you are the millionth customer, you can win a new car.
OpenView HD said it plans to expand its channel offering in the future, having just added BBC World News to the platform.
“Viewers can look forward to a wider variety of entertainment for the whole family – with a mix of international and local content, our 24-hour movie channels, the best animated children’s content, and more.”
