If United sack Moyes they better be ready to give the new guy about 100 - 150 million quid to go out and buy the players the squad needs to be remotely near the talent levels of Arsenal, City and Chelsea.
- Left back. Evra is done and is a liability. Buttner is a backup and Fabio is so-so, but not a superstar.
- Centre back. Ferdinand is crocked again and is 35. Vidic is 32 and can't get through a full season. Evans tries hard, but he just isn't a superstar. Jones & Smalling are alternatives, but neither look like rocks back there.
- Deep-lying playmaker. When Carrick is out there isn't a player in the squad that can get the midfield flowing for 90 minutes. He's also 32. Jones can win you the ball, but his passing range is inadequate. Giggs is freakin' 40-years old and will maybe give you an hour. Cleverley and Anderson are lol. This team needs a young star at the position.
- Possibly a CDM. Jones is the best option currently in the position, but unfortunately for him he is slotted in at CB (due to the aforementioned weakness at the CB position) every now and then, so he can hardly settle. As for depth, Fellaini hasn't yet settled but he will be given a chance because of the transfer fee, but no guarantees. Fletcher is back but no guarantees he'll ever play at the level he was before his illness. Simply put, United currently have one CDM they can rely on but he can't always play there due to weaknesses elsewhere.
- Wide players. Nani, even when healthy, is obviously not a Moyes favourite. He's also inconsistent. Valencia can defend, can beat his man, but cannot provide a convincing pass/cross into the danger area. The Spurs' game was a prime example of this. Kagawa isn't a wide player, simple. Zanuzaj is an obvious talent, but he can't play both wings at the same time and he is still developing. And at the rate things are going, someone is going to hurt him soon to stop him. Zaha, as yet, is unproven as a week-in, week-out player in the Premier League, not that he's been given a chance anyway. Ashley Young, well, not much to be said there. Speed to run down the sideline and that is it. His service is hardly better than Valencia's. There is room for a ready made, quality wide player.
- Forwards. RvP is 30 and has battled injuries this term. Always a worry that he can go through his Arsenal injury streak. Chicarito offers nothing but poaching and if your team isn't constantly feeding him the ball in and around the box he is a slightly better version of Dimitar Berbatov. Welbeck has hit his straps in recent weeks, so that is good news, but we need to see if he can truly grow into a first-choice forward that can net 15+ goals per season.
At the end of the day United has one player that has to do everything from creating and scoring goals to dropping back and assisting the deep-lying midfielders.
