Hetzner gets rid of all hosting setup fees

Well done Hetzner. They slashed their bandwidth rates over the last year, and this is another big step towards making local hosting more affordable.

Setup fees for hosting are the biggest con around! Considering the entire system is automated, how could they justify charging a setup fee?

no, that's the point. hetzner doesn't use cpanel, plesk or whm. so they did have to do this manually to some extent and cover this cost.
well, certainly that was the case when i was still using them a year back...

eventually, hooray! - now reduce your hosting prices, so as to be inline with international rates...

I can't quite understand how local ISP's / Hosting companies / VoIP providers can justify the higher prices - don't they realise their customers utilise the internet and most can use Google to get comparative rates?

per example: If I can host in the heart of the internet (USA) at a tenth of of the rate, why would I host in Africa - where they seem at times not even able to get the basics right, like keep the backup generator filled with diesel?

Surely the risk to host at Hetzner is much higher than at theplanet.com, therefore Hetzner's rates should reflect this to be competitive - or am I missing something?

A similar situation exists in the local VoIP market, with suppliers like VOX & FNB Connect; comparing their rates to Telkom (that invested in copper infrastructure) and 3G suppliers (that invested in wireless infrastructure) - surley they should compare their rates to international VoIP providers where you can obtain a 021 or 011 number and not a 087 number at a fraction of the cost with free calls to landline numbers?

The international VoIP providers have pop servers across the globe, do the local guys?

The rates border on extortion – surely this is no way to retain customers. Is it not cheaper to keep a customer than to obtain a new one?

because nobody is willing to take the responsibility for that... they all want a salary, but not the responsibility.

Companies actually still charge setup fees?

They use konsoleH.

What really gets my blood boiling is insurance companies who still charge a joining fee and then on top of that charge you a monthly "administration" fee. Really? An administration fee? For doing what exactly? It must really be a great administrative burden to have all those automatic debit orders coming in every month. And a joining fee? They should be grateful that you've chosen to give them your business! Imagine if Telkom or your ISP charged you a joining fee for no justifiable reason just for the pleasure of doing business with them and then tried to charge you for an administration fee each month in addition to the service you are paying to provide.
