hi everyone,

i would like to get feedback on how the new cell c network performs with gaming. has anyone tried hooking up their cell c connection to a ps3 and playing online? if so, how was the lag etc.?

i am keen to buy 2xR1999 data sims for 10gb a month and use it for downloads and online gaming on ps3 and xbox 360. i have a 3.6mbps hsdpa samsung phone and with vodacom 3g i got good results on ps3. the downloads were a bit slow, but i could play uncharted 2 with practically no lag. uncharted 2 also didn't seem to use too many megs when playing online - about 50mb per hour.

i'd appreciate whatever details you guys can give me. looking forward to the launch here in durban at the end of the month!

Yee its R2999 for 5gigs per month. It will depend on the load on the tower and backhaul bandwidth otherwise it should be playable.
But sorry I have no feedback on the product.

yes, i'm going to use the data sims in my UMTS 900 compatible phone. 10gb for R333 a month is what it works out to... not bad, considering some ADSL deals are more expensive than this (e.g. telkom do broadband 2).

Remember that the highest speed that a mass market phone can support currently is 10 Mbps (Sony Xperia X10, etc). Most smartphones only support 7.2 Mbps

How would this setup work though? Do you need to just plug in the modem/dongle into the usb
port of the ps3 or would you need to connect your ps3 to your laptop/pc which is in turn connected to the modem/dongle?

@gg_allin - from what people have been saying in the forums - the speed of the cell c network is a bit faster than a 4mb adsl connection, so i think my 3.6mbps hsdpa phone will be fast enough. hopefully i will get download speeds of around 450kb/s. it will be interesting to compare speeds with people with different modems (and of course the cell c dongle) when it's launched in durban.

@viper25 - yes, you need to connect your ps3 to your pc with a lan cable and then share the internet connection. it works well from my experience with vodacom 3g. i've also heard that you can plug the cell c dongle straight into a router and then connect your ps3 to it either wirelessly or by lan cable, but i haven't tried this yet. can anyone confirm that this works?

Thanks, wow, plug dongle straight into a router. That would be awesome.

Some new routers support USB modems, some other routers you just put your SIM in.

I would also like to know about the latencies. Those who have got it, what's the pings like? Telkom is annoying me so much so I'm looking for alternatives.

I just want to know when this will be launched in JHB.
Hope it gets launched this month.

List of 3g Routers

Are there wireless ADSL2+ routers where you can just plug in your sim?

1.Dovado 4gr - my pick as it supports speeds up to 21mbps + they update supported modems frequently via firmware updates. I have used this & it works with ps3 thru wifi and ethernet cable, after a quick setup on computer which is required once. Can get 1 from computers for africa or IC
=/- R1600
2. Netgear 3g router supports speeds 7.2mbps - +/-R650
from zapsonline

Awesome sounding good, just need someone with xbox live to confirm games are lag free ?
