hey guys

Both Vodacom and MTN are having launch party's for the iphone 4 tomorrow night making them available from the 22nd Of September.

After tweeting:
It amazes me how both MTN and Vodacom are releasing the iphone tomorrow yet there is still NO pricing...its beyond a joke!
Tag11Mac tweeted saying that Vodacom dealers have the prepaid price of them,he reckons that the price is
Iphone 4 16GB=R7399
iphone 4 32GB= R8499

Apparently stock is very limited so if you have that kind of money lying around I would call Vodacom tomorrow an try get them to hold one for you or you can give MTN a call as I am sure the prices will be very similar.MTN shops that have stock are V&A Waterfront,Sandton City,Gateway.

Hope this helps :)

i'd like to see the contract prices but i guess i can wait a few more days

thx for the post. that prices are fairly on par with what we normally pay for electronics compared to US prices.

Lol over 1,000 USD for a f'n IPHONE? I hope the contract offers are reasonable. Man these companies are making money...amazing.

In the US the 16gig ip4 was $599 or around R4,300. --- No contract.

This is how these companies have CEO's getting paid as much as the CEO's in Europe etc. We are getting ripped off, even with the import duties etc that these companies have to pay.

Hong Kong has the cheapest iPhones in the world, if you look at the prices of all the unlocked iPhones across the world. The funny thing is, you walk into a shop there and compare the prices of the handsets and they are very much in line with here - Blackberries are 100 rand give or take on our prices. The only exception to this is the iPhone, which is 5k for the 16Gb there and was 9k at the time for the 16Gb 3Gs. At least we're only 2.5k more expensive than them this time, if those prices are real.

OK but why haven't they released the prices on contracts? I mean we knew what the prices were everywhere else from day one.

Bull!

In the US the phone is network locked and you must sign a 24mth cellular contract. I know because I tried to buy mine from there.

In the end I paid R6,750 and got the 32GB from New Zealand... there are cheaper places, but it was more about convenience for me.

Check http://tag11mac.posterous.com for a diagram/chart of pricing around the world for locked versus unlocked devices.

Personally, despite already importing mine, I think the prices are quite reasonable given the demand and the quality of the device. It is every bit as good as I hoped, HD video alone was worth the upgrade for me and you have to check the quality of this screen, I can't even see pixels it's so sharp.

Phoned the Istore - not allowed to give any information out... MTN at sandton is not answering their phone...

Vodacom tweeted earlier that they are not allowed to reveal pricing until the launch at midnight.

COUNTER your "BULL" claim.

I was JUST in the US and used to be on AT&T...believe me. We are getting ripped off beyond belief! It's not a reasonable price at all. Now as far as NETWORK locking. You can get one cheaper at Amazon.com/co.uk or places like http://intlo.com/en/shop-mac and have it shipped here. You will still save r2-3,000.

Having the network locked in the US is not that big of deal as it is here because over there the quality of service is average, where here it is way below average.

Firstly, I said "I think the prices are quite reasonable given the demand" that is my opinion. You are entitled to yours.

You can jailbreak/unlock, but to get the phone directly in the US they require a signed contract.

I know it can be bought cheaper in other countries, I did that! But for the effort I went through, paying 8-odd grand is probably worth it. Maybe my time is more valuable to me than yours is?

As for the quality of the network... come on! The US have the worst cellular network in the world! Ours isn't great, but AT&T and Verizon are in deep trouble over there. This whole antennagate debacle is only happening over there, everyone in Europe (and me so far in SA) have been fine without worrying about this signal dropping problem.

thanks for the contract pricing - any finality on prepaid prices?

The prepaid pricing will vary from store to store depending on their stock holding, if you buying prepaid, would recommend waiting till next week when more stock arrives and the prices settle according to competition / demand. Based on Vodacom costing for the 16GB will be roughly +R7K and 32GB will be +R8K
