Mobile data laptop deals: 8ta vs Vodacom vs MTN

I am very impressed with 8ta's aggressive pricing strategy here. They are certainly providing good incentives.

I think 8ta could really kick off with a big bang if they offer aggressive tablet contracts, like the iPad and Galazy Tab. I hope they're listening.

Agreed - don't buy. You really don't want to get locked into a 3 year contract with anyone right now. Just get a Cell C data bundle and buy a laptop - still cheaper than all the laptop inclusive deals listed here!

The packages in the table would be easier to compare if the retail value of the laptops and modems were included.

True, and I hate contracts, that would be the one thing driving me away from this. I also couldn't have any of those laptops for 3 years. But, at least you always get the data.

I also want Cell C to bring their network to Joburg, then we can really compare.

Three year contracts are a joke!! You got to be crazy to take these outs. After 3 years other other users will be paying MUCH less for their data. The government should make exploitation like this illegal, just like they did with gym contracts a while ago. No contracts over 2 years should be allowed, 1 year preferably. 8ta's unethical business models disgust me. Be warned!!

I don't quite agree that they are unethical - it is just really silly to sign a 36 month contract. It is not like they are hiding anything. They seem to be very clear on the details.

anyone signing a contract for mobile these days are mad or for any communication for that matter... things are going to get interesting, especially when the LL is unbundled (if our minister walks the talk). This means broadband will become a lot more affordable for the man on the street thus driving more competition in the mobile sector and fixed line. You will get a lot more bang for your buck.

Those that take the 36 months contract will be crying when the time comes.

a few years ago, when the Huawei E620 1.8Mbps HSDPA modem first came out, iTalk Cellular had a special on MTN, for an IBM 1.6celeron lappie, with the E620 and a full 150Mb per month for R454pm over 24mo... at the time it was a good deal ! Back then the 150megs could outlast the month :-)
Now its not even a day's worth of data.... but that IBM R52 laptop is still going well, now with my kid, modem bummed off onto someone else long time ago
Its very good to see how far we've come!
Had a look at the 8ta lappie deals yesterday.... seems quite good.... esp on the 3.2Gb package.... doesnt help me though, already got 4meg adsl line ... just need a laptop for wife - better to just buy outright with cc
3yr contract is a bit long also... I'm sure in less than 2 years the going rate for both laptops and data will be much lower, then u don't wanna be stuck

These deals are decent. Would love to see the full specs of the Samsung laptops though.

I guess I'll have to content myself that it's pretty much a generic laptop!

Phew, R500 over 3 years is R18 000! Certainly better to buy a laptop and run off to Cell C for data.

u r right
these prices are very high
even though it might seem cheap for the now or the next 3-6 months
what bout after a year or 18 months
ppl that take these 36 month contracts will cry
just be4 cellc hit the market the 300mb.500mb n 1gb contracts seemed nice
ask those ppl now n most of them r disgusted but they got another 20 months paying R250, R350, R499 per month
crazy

You make a very compelling arguement.
