MWEB is ready to offer 1Mbps ADSL

There were posts last night confirming that the Telkom 512 to 1024 has already been done. I'm wondering if Mweb automatically give 1024 to their own 512 subscribers. Although the line may allow a 1024 sync, I'm sure Mweb would still need to 'open the throttle' for their subscribers to benefit.
I'm currently an Mweb 384 member, but will gladly go to the 512 package if they do up it to 1024.
Watching this forum with bated breath .......

Im on a 384k line at home since my exchange can only handle up to 512k
So I called telkom 1st to find out if i upgraded to the 512k line would it be 512k or 1MB
They confirmed that it will sync at 1MB

Awesome news to go with my Redafrica Special

I wonder if Mweb will do the all inclusive for the 1Mbps. They just have the data option on their site at the moment.

Well Mweb's price difference between 512k and 1mb aint that much. Seems like a good deal, only bad thing is downloads is only gonna be during night hours then.

Yay! 384 narrowband is staying, woohoo!!!

Only people with too much money get upgraded, awesome!!

Eat **** Telkom.

So why is the price gap between 1MB and 4MB so small?
I'm not saying that it should be more expensive, I'm saying that 512 should be cheaper :P

lol many of us on 512k have not seen an upgrade since the service was launched in 2002. At least people on 192k were upgraded to 384k, and enjoyed a significantly higher price reduction.

What's with all the speculation? It's no secret that they have started bumping speeds up.

Heck, there's even a notice from Telkom themselves: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ervices-will-be-upgraded-to-synch-at-1024kbps

Hey Mike

My question / concern is will the 512 to 1024 be limited to users who have Telkom as their ISP or would it apply to all ISP's using Telkoms infrastructure? Could the ISP still offer a 512 package and merely do their own throttling back? Just wondering ...

We're with MWeb 512Kbps and I just noticed our line is synced at 1024/512, according to our router. Does this mean Telkom have upgraded our line and that MWeb have upgraded us to 1Mbps, or that Telkom have upgraded the line but MWeb have yet to do the same?

hmm I hear you but I doubt it's as "many" as you say since there were very few people on the 512k to start with. It was by far the most expensive option per kb/s.

The 384 was the second most expensive but since most people don't own a few gold mines/oil companies that you need to be able to afford the 4/10mb, that's what they're stuck with.

There should be 1/2/10 mbps connections only, at the bare minimum.

The latter...

Just called Mweb. They don't offer a 1Mb all inclusive package. The lady did say that I could call Telkom and check the exchange for my area. If my exchange is capable of 1024 then I can take out the Mweb 512 all incl. package and it will operate at 1024.

I'm not sure I understand. It means that your physical 512k DSL line (irrespective of whether you have one via an ISP or Telkom) will be bumped up. It's the uncapped data packages that may not be.

You'd be surprised at how many exchanges don't even support 4 meg (including mine). 512k was therefore the highest speed option available, and the higher upstream speed between it and 384k (256k vs. 128k) makes a big difference when working from home.

I would like confirmation of that...

@Grouter

I'm also sceptical. I think I will keep an eye on the Mweb website. Hopefully they make mention of it. (But I'm itching for more speed !! )
