Uncapped ADSL and ADSL speed upgrades - what to expect

Thereare already tonnes of people on 1meg. Why is mybroadband still acting like it might happen when it already has?

Well there were never very many subscribers on 512 imo...

Most people paid the extra R90 odd for 4mbps... Whilst the upgrades are welcome, the pricing is still quite skewed... I'm paying R413 for 'up to 10mbps' but I'm only getting 4... assuming I could get 8mbps as my modem suggests, it would be R51.63 per mbps... That's a saving of R274 per mbps if I was syncing at 8mbps. If they had bumped 384kbps users to 1mbps and 512 to 2mbps at the same pricing, it would make more sense...

But I don't work for telkom... So I don't really have a say... :/

WTF? Rather do your PROMISED 10MB upgrades first. It is now a year later and I am still on 4MB...

There has been no formal notification from Telkom that it has been done. This could also explain why the ISPs are playing the waiting game...

Perhaps not done, but the process is already well under way. That differs to this:
Telkom looks set to bump up DSL512 speeds to 1Mbps in the near future
Also, this is a formal notification that they have started.

Nope, that is a network notification. The ISPs cannot rely on those for business/contract purposes.

Well then they may as well not offer a 10 Mbps product seeing as the 10 Mbps upgrades have still not been completed.

You can't just hang around waiting. There are scores of people who have already been upgraded. That still doesn't answer why MyBB is writing articles as though the upgrade is still coming soon, when the process has already started.

Wonder when/if Telkom is going to push up the 384 lines.

They won't. The are basically selling the 384 service at cost. I wish Telkom would have 4 packages instead of 3.

R152 for 384.

R252 for 1meg.

R352 for 4meg.

R452 for 10meg.

Cant do that. It might make Telkom look good for a moment.

blablabla faster internet blablabla

more hot air, no action.

Telkom goes through CEO's faster than their fastest ADSL line can exchange packets

And you know how much it "costs" Telkom to supply a 384 ADSL line? I call BS, most likely it doesn't "cost" Telkom a cent extra to supply a 4MB to 384 line. Its still the same copper line. This difference in price is just another way to rip consumers a new one. So they will now be making half the profit they made by bumping 512k up to 1MB. Pfft.

So we go from having the option to buy a Picanto a Getz or a Hummer, to options to buy a Picanto, a Ford Focus or a Hummer. But any improvements are still welcome so I'm not complaining about more. Just saying the spread of options are really dumb.

I agree. You really do have to wonder about the actual costs about these things. I'm sure some people in the industry might be able to give more details, and although I know there are many technical differences between fixed line (adsl) and wireless (3g) internet, the cell networks have been upping their speeds all the time.

Wireless networks need to upgrade the towers and then I guess the network to the towers. And they do this quite often. They don't have to do anything to the air between us and the tower. In the same way I assume Telkom is not doing anything to the copper between us and the dslam.

Telkom need to upgrade the DSLAMs/exchange and the network to all the exchanges. I guess the difference is that there are many more DSLAMS than cell phone towers..? And probably the equipment in both these cases cost different, but still you get my drift with how this should be compared.

I'm no expert on this and would like to hear from those who are, but am curious about what kind of numbers are we talking about here. How many dslams do they have (let's say in major metro areas) vs cell towers out there?

The 3G operators do seem to be moving at a faster pace than our fixed line friends.
3G Speed is going up, data limits going up and price coming down.
Don't be surprised if SA sees uncapped 3G before Telkoms 10M rollout is complete.

According to Lars you will never see uncapped wireless.
