Vodacom network problems caused by Germiston cable break (17 June 0211)

I wonder if this construction company can be held accountable. like make them pay for the repair costs and such.
Most definitely; cost to repair plus proven revenue losses (plus VAT).

Successful collection depends on quality of evidence gathered immediately after the damage occurred - photographs, witness statements, details of alleged offender and machinery involved, etc.

From what I understand it was a building contractor with a digger. Hopefully we can repossess his bakkie in lieu of repair and service charges. :)

That's the biggest frustration - contractor goes into liquidation and chances of full recovery are virtually zero; not even worthwhile to obtain a default judgement.

Very professional of you to generalise like that.

if this happened in Gauteng why the hell was the network out in durban

Wow, sorry I'm alive.

It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. Why are you so sensitive? As MickeyD pointed out, and my original point which was lost on you, these cable breaks are often (if not always) caused by some kind of construction crew and the network operator have little recourse.

There's a near 100% change the fibre provider (DFA, etc.) had other customers also on that route, so many more could have been affected.

And it is down in Nelspruit. My Blackberry Internet Service is non existing.

Gauteng seems to have grown nationwide. :D

I think when a transmission cable breaks it can affect other areas aswell. It could also be a result of Vodacom busy rerouting traffic etc. That is how I understand it...maybe Jannie can confirm?

Yes, certain services use common infrastructure while others are split across different systems to remove single-points-of-failure. In a meeting this morning (in Cape Town) 2 of us in the room were affected by this problem but the other 4 were working fine.

Basically, the network is very complex and there's not a one-to-one correlation between regions and services anymore.

Damn trucks, if they are not congesting our vehicle highways they cause congestion on our cyber highways as well.

there must be a lot of broken cables around the witkoppen road area, because every time i go there for work, i have so little signal that i can't hold a data connection/phone call for more than 5 minutes.
