Web Africa ADSL general feedback

Sounds a lot like the same issue, except I'm not using a VPN, and I'm using WA's assigned DNS server. Seems to be all google services now, not just gmail. Very frustrating - everything else with the account is perfect.

Change your DNS to:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Can anyone around post their traceroute to mail.google.com? I'd like to compare with mine, latency to it appears to have increased to over 100ms since this morning's 30ms result:

Live help is really impressive. "Ricardo Tango" asked me for my customer code after 5 mins of silence, and hasn't said a damn word for going on 25 mins now since then.

It might well be my exchange, connecting with Afrihost gives me 100% packet loss, with WebAfrica things work, but are slow at the moment.

@Aessa - wow - your results are even worse than mine. I see you're also in Cape Town - I wonder if there's a problem between us and Joburg, where the local google servers seem to be situated.

Indeed, city-local is looking good now:

Same for my VPN to US office, works fine. Just to or via JHB that seems to be an issue now.

Mind you, WA had this posted long ago:
https://www.webafrica.co.za/serverstatus.php

Date: 2014-11-19 13:25
ISSUE: Major backhaul link between Johannesburg and Cape Town down
AFFECTED SERVICE: A/VDSL and Hosting
LOCATION: National
START DATE: Wed 19 Nov 2014 13:25 (SAST)
END DATE: N/A
EXPECTED DURATION: N/A
IMPACT: Slow connectivity and high packet loss

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

was on 10mb home-run at halfspeed
upgraded to 10mb business it got worce

upgraded to 20mb , so half speed ,is my "full speed",and nope still stuck at 5mbps??
so it only runs at 25% line speed if i am lucky

now support say we have a problem wiht home uncap waiting for a fix

but that dont answer why business was slow (same as home)

so
10mb home/10mb bushiness/20mb home
are all running at the same trough put, speed test show 5mbps
but buffers at 240/360p

hope they can fix the probs and now this link :

@Aessa - I'm so used to Afrihost/Axxess' "Everything is nominal" status pages that I didn't even think to check that. That certainly fits, and explains the problems. Thanks for linking :)

Hopefully the link going down will lead to a review of the link itself, as Google services do frequently exhibit the same slowdown, though not to today's extent. I suspect that link may be over-saturated at certain times of day.

Well, it doesn't help that the icon at the top-right is a green check mark, it should be red for this. And I would have not wasted time rebooting my modem and debugging if I knew about this when it was posted, so I'd like to get an RSS feed for that page. Afrihost has one.

Agreed - or an SMS to let customers know when there's a fault like this that can severely impact notable services.

"16:00 Update - Traffic levels have return to 95%. There is still high latency and some packet loss."

buffering like crazy on 360p
10mb business
support said i am on 10mbps and cant find any issues but they havent even loged into my account to test it
speed tests show +-500kb/s
guest@telkom works 100% so its not my line
tracers are good

the realtime buffer throughput is 60-110kb/s on youtube

FIX YOU **** WEBAFRICA

Hi Sybertiger,

I have asked our Network team to investigate and provide feedback. Really sorry about the issues on your account and there is definitely something fishy on your account.

I will have feedback shortly.

Just want to comment...I'm trying to work sparingly with my WebAfrica capped account, so I switched to my Afrihost account to stream. Good grief! The Afrihost account buffers like a mofo, so I switched to my WebAfrica account and not a single buffer!! Thanks WebAfrica! Now if you could only introduce some ANYTIME bonus data that would be great!!

Thanks for the feedback Aquiva :D Glad things are running so smoothly.

I'm shopping around for a new ISP. My wife is on leave for December and I want to make sure she's got a solid internet connection for her break from work. I am susper tired of being shaped into the ground on home uncapped accounts and I want to try out a business account. How is webafrica? Are there thresholds, star ratings, high contention and shaping on the business accounts? And how is the performance in general?

P2P is one of the main reasons I'm pissed at my current ISP. A lot of the games I play uses P2P and my bald spot is getting bigger and bigger.

Hi Arksun,

A Business uncapped or Home capped account is the way to go since you need a solid connection during the day. P2P/NNTP traffic shaped during the day on home capped and resumes to as close to line speed as possible after 17h00. Our Business accounts do not make use of the star rating and has its own AUP attached to it. Check link here for more info.

Since P2P is a necessity for you I would recommend a Business capped or uncapped account as those accounts P2P is not that heavily shaped even less on a Business Capped account.

Looking for the right package, and I see good things with webafrica.

I was on the mweb 4mb premium uncapped. I game, I download nntp and torrents if nntp is down.I stream twitch everyday. My gb usage ranges from 250-370gb per month. Is premium uncapped the way to go? Thanks

A 4mbps Business account will do that usage easily if you use the download plus period (12-6am) for most of your downloading. The Business uncapped accounts uses a 10 day rolling window to calculate your rating. Take a look at our KB article for more info.

@WAHelper - any update on the Home uncapped debacle? As slow as ever so I'm guessing it has not been fixed yet.

Hi Chris,

Our team has rolled out a fix so if you still having issues please PM me your account details so I can see if your account was included.

Is nntp shaped during the day?How bad?

NNTP/P2P is shaped heavily during the day on Home based accounts but I cannot provide an exact percentage amount unfortunately as it will change depending on network load at the time.

Business accounts are not impacted that much by NNTP/P2P shaping during the day time.

What is the Telkom number these days to reset your ADSL line?

Switched to a Business Capped Account last week but it still lags. Email hangs when sending login information and browsing mostly during the day is slow.

Mr Webafrica Helper, I sent you my account details on the 12th via PM, was there any feedback from your technical staff in regards to my line.

Hi BTTB,

You on a Business capped profile which is on our 2nd highest bandwidth profile and shaping on those accounts are hardly noticeable at all.

If you do a trace route how does your line/exchange look?

Same here. I just want to say '**** you' to WA.

Nope. I would stay the **** away from WebAfrica Business Uncapped cos it's an overpriced piece of ****.

Yep, at this point, I strongly advise you Afrihost/OW refugees to stay the **** away from WA Uncapped products for now. They have been performing so fking horribly.

I gave them too many chances. They blew them away as if they were like ****ing birthday candles. I'm done with this ****. I will cancel all of my WA accounts and advise my clients to do the same.

Fuc_k you, WebAfrica.

Hi DarkSpectre,

I can understand you frustrated with the speed you getting but there is no need to resort to offensive language especially considering that you have not reported the latest issue to our ADSL team so they can investigate. The last time you had issues was more than a month ago and after checking your DSL console, which shows that you are not being affected by throttling (Green Zone), the only shaping you will notice is on P2P/NNTP during the day but again not much as its a Business account. So the issue is definitely somewhere else and our team has also confirmed the current issue is only affecting Home Uncapped accounts.

How does your line stats look and have you done a trace route to see if you not being affected by an exchange issue? Our support team are available to assist at all times but we need issues like this reported to us with all the necessary test results so we can escalate your issue and get it fixed. If you would like me to assist and get this matter investigated please PM me the test results so I may escalate it.
