Amazon’s big move into South Africa

South Africa won’t see a dedicated store anytime soon.

Much better to have Makro charging about R2,5k for a 3G/WiFi Kindle  , when instead, they can be imported directly from Amazon.com for about R1,800 (from what I've read).

He added that Amazon offered free Super Saver shipping to South Africa from its UK store, and that delivery pricing to SA on Amazon.co.uk had been brought into line with what UK residents would expect to pay.

I thought that we could only order from the US store. Can someone verify which option is correct, or can we now order from both ?

Clearly I am behind times. Thought I couldn't buy from Amazon at all. :o So this is good news to me. :)

The only schlep of buying internationally is the clearance through local customs... or maybe I am doing it wrong.

This is going to hurt Takealot alot... They're essentially SA's portol to Amazon...

It only allows me to order from the US site

You can order from basically all of them, at least I've ordered from the US, UK and French ones. It all depends on the type of goods, and the big stuff like TV's you can't buy from any of them.

on the UK store, its states specifically that South Africans qualify for free shipping when using that portal.
i think there is a minimum spend for that though.

I don't see how this is going to hurt Takealot, they said they're still not selling right? Maybe they will eventually buy them out. BTW, what's the difference in buying from Amazon directly and using Takealot? Do you think Take puts a high markup on their imports? Haven't really looked into it.

You can only order books from Amazon.co.uk. Put anything else in your basket and you'll get the finger when you try to check out. Not even apparel...

Can confirm, that at the moment there is a free delivery to SA. Placed an order for 16 Blu Rays. ETA is today :) That was four weeks ago. No tracking info is available. But the prices are excellent compare to the local market. Average price is 3.75 pounds per disk. Cannot beat that :)

The piece is about the fantastic news of Amazon's investment and how it will create jobs and everyone goes on about local delivery. Think bigger people! This will look wonderful on SA's CV - a thumbs up from one of the best known tech companies in the world.
It is interesting that they chose to establish almost in the city centre. Usually a company wants a presence where they do their business. This is definitely not the case in Cape Town as they do not do any business locally.
