Vodacom's BlackBerry Public Relations disaster

And here I thought this had nothing to do with a PR department. I was completely wrong - I gave them far too much credit. As it turns out, their PR department are made up of imbeciles.

And can mybroadband please explain why the headline states that this is a Blackberry PR disaster? It's not - it's a Vodacom PR disaster.

Your headline is completely misleading - it suggests that this was somehow Blackberry's doing and is across the board. It's not. For the sake of not coming across as completely biased, please amend the headline...

Personally I couldn't care if it was signed off by the janitor at Vodaworld. It doesn't change anyone's perception...

I agree.

My first impression - from the headline - was that this disaster was Blackberry/RIM doing, whereas it has nothing to do with them.

Honestly, what a joke, Uys' statement and actions smack of a cover up. Vodacom have clearly lost touch with their subscribers!

Errr think about it this way:
Jannie was clear in regards to that the cap has been implemented and even the director came out defending it.

Not only was this released by the PR department but it was actually implemented.
The only disaster is that it was published.

/dons tinfoil hat
For all we know they intended to implement the cap without public notification and cite "poor service" as an excuse for the capping.

The fact that speed throttling was only one of the options which were considered, and hence should have not been communicated at all, makes the situation ever worse.

I'm sorry but I do not buy this for a second. Vodacom subsequently supported their original article with numerous facebook updates, tweets (calling customers using more than 3MB a day "data hogs" and bizarrely stating that it equates to 12000 tweets), subsequent press releases and Vodacom's own senior representatives engaged with the broadband community at large regarding the issue, and at no point during that 48 hour process through numerous pubic engagement channels did they state that this was merely one of many options.

Sorry but this is going from bad to worse now for Vodacom. Stop trying to justify this disaster with more lies...

/sigh
They should have read my post to jannievanzyl suggesting that VC should shut up now and do nothing.
/shrug

/sits back and waits

Vodacom has gone from a well respected and professional provider to being a complete joke. Do they really think their subscriber base is so gullible and easily convinced to believe something like this now?

I'll just put this post here for posterity.

Nice post jannie...except that irrespective of whether anyone is abusing the system in any way, form or function you are not able to do anything to anyone regarding their usage due to the contractual agreement and the vapid t&c's implemented.

The best thing you guys should be doing now is to shut up and hope this blows over.

Uys response is too late.

He realised his bonus was at stake. Sorry dude. You will see this effect in the next 12 Months.
