Telkom sheds more fixed line users

Telkom CEO Nombulelo Moholi described the South African telecommunications market as “one under intense pressure as growth in fixed and mobile voice revenues slows considerably”

Read: After so many years of having a monopoly, we have no idea how to compete in a "protected" open market. So we blame other indirect factors for our loss of revenue...

LOL and STILL the country as a whole does nothing.

Telkom clearly needs to be regulated and LLU implemented asap but wow, don't underestimate the power of greed and money.

I mean what more evidence do we need? Like honestly? Why don't people ask these questions when they interview the president, minister of finance, ICASA, DoC, Mandela...Is everyone clueless to what is going on when it comes to Telecommunication in this country or what?

Something doesn't make sense. How many of these articles do we need for a change to happen? Are we that powerless? Hmmm:confused:

They need to include free local calls and some free national minutes with the line rental, but they are too greedy and stupid to realise this. For the R139-00 line rental you can get some excellent deals from the mobile operators which includes free minutes and a phone you get to keep at the end of the contract.

Also, if they think that the mobile operators are eating into their landline numbers and their solution is 8ta they are in for a big surprise. Cell C which this month has been around for 10 years still hasnt made a profit and i dont see it being any different for 8ta in the next 10 years. Looking at their results this year, they need to do some serious soul searching or I think they might not be around in a few years time.

It is no secret they jumped on uncapped very late after MWEB started it all and they only recently aswell lowered their per gb pricing. Perhaps next year won't look so gloomy :p

Sometimes the beast needs to feel abit of pain and suffering but it can only strengthen them in the long run.

Now give us 10MB damnit :D

What's the use of bringing us more services when it costs an arm and a leg to use them. Plus there's decent substitutes for most services now.

The problem with Telkom is that they don't care and are too greedy to realize that they need to restructure their pricing options, learn to value their customers, and do everything in their power to stop clients from leaving.

Not too long ago Mweb grovelled me to stay with their company after I had some issues. I stayed, even with the issues, because I felt valued. Unfortunately I had to cancel because I now live in an area where Telkom doesn't want to replace stolen cables. Yet another massive factor contributing to these losses i'm sure.

In the current situation i'm glad they are suffering and they should suffer some more. Like lose another 3 million lines. Then we *might* start seeing change. Or not.

the post office never moved with the advent of email, and lost an entire market that they had monopolised for centuries. Telkom is headed the same way. You want fixed line subscribers? give us a reason to want the service.

It's not surprising that they are losing fixed-line subscribers when they themselves have been refusing to replace stolen copper. Also, at R130 per month before you've even paid for a single call, even a prepaid cellphone is cheaper than using a landline these days.

It's adapt or die a slow and painful death for Telkom! Many many business rely on fixed line services, and it still makes no sense for them to pursue wireless options, but for the man on the street ADSL is simply not affordable. How ironic is it that they're complaining about their fixed line decline, while they're advertising their sister company 8ta's product(10GB for R199/m) on their own website, under the DSL section! What a joke... must say that I'd find ADSL a bind as I often surf the web while visiting the in-laws, can't do that with ADSL!

The free ADSL gamble didn't seem to work .... Has that promotion ended?
I wonder what other tricks Telkom has up it's sleeve to keep customers since there is no way people are going to continue to pay over-inflated prices for access to the internet when should be a right to have it, by now.

Prepaid Waya Waya FTW!

At only R140 per year, that's the only reason I still have a fixed line or else I would have no use for TELKOM!

Cell C and iBurst meet all my needs.

What Telkom needs to do is make their "Closer" packages standard. I.E. For like, R150 you get a free phone, free minutes during the day, free local calls after 7 and reduced rates. Like everyone here has pointed out, for R150 p/m you can actually get a much better deal from all of the mobile operators. Telkom needs to realise this and start matching their products to what the mobile phone guys are offering.

Why do you need a fixed line?

To phone: Most people are only home after working hours. Compare the few calls one has to make at home with the Telkom call costs plus line hire and a cell phone can easily satisfy the same need at around the same cost.

ADSL: Since cell phone providers started to provide the same service, minus the extra ADSL line cost, it became a viable option to a lot of people that have access at work in the day and don't need internet in such large quantities after hours.

Now add the poor treatment of customers and 1+1+2.:p

its an expected trend, fixed line for home user is doesn't add much value considering communication application that internet provides. telkom should enhance ADSL service, more better speed and a very improved restoration time to recover loss of revenue in voice
