Don't get ripped off with mobile data

MTN says it has an agreement with Opera Mini Browser (OMB) which allows users to compress data, thus equating the 75MB capacity to 500MB of normal internet usage.

An agreement? Liars! Opera has always been able to compress data to save usage. I would also like to hear what MTN's opinion of "normal internet usage" is. Compressing the data severely reduces the quality of images. Also, flash based websites can't be compressed.

I at no point considered your offering as a Rip-Off, until you tried to equate 75mb of compressed data with 500mb of uncompressed data.

I'm glad I don't use MTN as my service provider.

CellC isn't great, but at least they're honest about their product offerings.

''8-ta, like MTN also has a fixed-rate offering
but only for prepaid BlackBerry users. It
offers six months worth of browsing
(BIS) at a cost of R600, or R100 a month,
and 500MB of “free” YouTube streaming.''

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 8ta BIS actually free for the 6 months, seeing as you receive R600 airtime when buying the package?

+1 That's what I would have thought.

I hereby officially confirm MTN as the biggest rip-off in the mobile telecoms industry in South Africa.

Because of the adverts I've seen released in the last few days by this sad company, I have now concluded that MTN really are OUT TO GET YOU!

The same guys who are trying to make you think that a 75MB/mth data bundle looks, acts or even sounds like BIS are the same guys I saw advertising a Samsung Galaxy Tab for R249 with a 10MB monthly data bundle. You got that right. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO FIND 10MB PER MONTH attractive.

T'huh.

I can't believe there are people out there bothering with MTN. While all cell companies tell lies, here and there there is some truth. Not so with MTN. All cellphone shop owner have a duty to tell this to each and every customer who is even contemplating to look at a MTN 'offer'. As regarding the opera mini MTN lie, WTF no further comment needed . . .

Moan all you want MTN does not care. If Cell C can do this R25=100MB valid for 60 days I'd jump ship

Not to mention that that extra 500mb data also gets used when you use the phone as a modem. So basically that 500mb is for everything else not covered by bis.

That is one awesome deal!

MTN is big rip-off. My contract expires in August this year, after about 15 years with them, gonna say goodbye and cancel !!

I have 4 MTN contracts. I am also running from them now. I won't renew any. I am switching over to Vodacom. They are also expensive but they have superior network coverage and are honest about their deals. Besides, the iPhone deals are much cheaper now on Vodacom.

Am glad no contract 4 me with any network... Migrated all mine in the last 4 - months
