im looking for a good antivirus for my pc , i currently using vipre antivirus , what do you think , what protection combo must i use for the best!

I use Avg free + Microsoft Security Essentials works well together - avg tends to pick up certain things quicker , and MSE tends to find things that managed to slip through avg's defenses.

AVG for your internet security and MSE for you PC security , EX. avg fill tell you this is a melicous file you wanting to download , MSE doesn't do that, AVG again doesn't protect as well against threats like backdoors/trojans etc as MSE would. And contrary to what people say - running two AV's aren't as bad or resource hungry

Oh and I hear the recently released LMUE 13 Antivirus not only cleans but also prevents future infections :)

most of the porpular antivirus apps as long as u update as required

Bit Defender - It costs money but totally worth it and its not resource intensive.

Huh?
From a programming point of view, how is that possible?

Simple, you can stick USB's or any media into your PC and the windows viruses just fail to run ;)

no response for any of the known API calls so to speak :)

For free anti virus, I cannot comment on Avast. Back when I was doing research for an alternative to AVG (because AVG started freezing my computer so that it requires a cold restart), Avira was the best choice according to various reviews.
So I went with that. I later decided to upgrade to a paid anti virus and after shopping around a bit and looking at reviews & comparisons (av-comparatives), I decided to just purchase the Premium version of Avira. Although it isn't top of the range, for R132, it is great value for money.

As for Microsoft Security Essentials... not so much. My memory stick "travels" quite often and almost always, when it has just been in a computer with only MSE installed, my anti virus pops up as soon as I plug it into my computer. If you browse through the av-comparatives website a bit, you'll see that MSE have the lowest detection rate (at 93.1%) based on their tests performed using 15 different anti virus packages.
