Hi Afriman,

I have send u a PM - my P2P speeds are horrible (50-70Kbit/s) since over a week and I don't consider myself a heavy downloader (125GB/month on 10Mbit line)...

Read the last 40-50 pages of this thread and you will find the reason.

Tip: Go into Client zone -> your uncapped account and use a 60 minute Turboboost (you get some free to test with). Check what happens to your P2P speeds....

Sorry, I smell a rat. How can your sister company and VOX announce new pricing, in-line with these upgrade's and AH cannot?

Can't speak for Vox but as far as I know Axxess are pre-empting the official notification and they're prepared to take the hit if the upgrades are not free as announced. There are also many other ISPS who, like us, are awaiting some notice from Telkom :(

No it doesn't. But I have called support and the guy on the phone told me that shaping is active on my account.

I just checked the new clientzone and there I see 12.5% Download/ 6.25% P2P - doesn't show in the old client zone.
But again, my average over the last 3 months is 125GB/month on a 10MBit line - how can you shape me for this???

Turbo activated and now my torrent jumped to over 950Kbit/s...
On a 10Mbit line I would expect that I don't get shaped before 500GB per month - especially if you advertise your current top downloader on 10Mbit on your website with 1,583.72 GB in a month. On the last 31 days I'm sitting at just around 100GB.

How much you have or haven't downloaded is irrelevant. You could, if circumstances permit, be shaped to oblivion without having moved a megabyte on your 10mb line.

You do have to move some data to be shaped, but generally yes, if demand is high enough - any Uncapped account could be shaped :(

The old ClientZone does not have a shaping report - this is only available in the new clientzone - which is generally the case for all the new features that we add

I'm not sure we ever denied this, we haven't lied to anyone.
We've always been open and honest with all of our clients.

I really can't say, it's all up to how the demand goes.
Home Uncapped accounts are subjected to shaping so I can't say if tomorrow/ tonight/ next month will see

any less shaping.

I just want to make it clear that our network is not running out of capacity or hitting any limits - the

shaping is there to manage the load. Our IPC is doing exactly what it's supposed to.
If you need an account that's guaranteed to be unshaped 24/7 maybe have a look into a Capped or Business

Uncapped account?

The network is doing what it's supposed to though - and that's shape non-essential traffic to allow realtime services to be unaffected.
This definitely isn't an IPC issue in general, or an IPC capacity issue

While the demand on our network is definitely higher than what we'd like it to be - we'll continue to shape until the demand drops off.

Like I said, from personal experience, we've been here before, we know what usage spikes look like as opposed to running out of capacity. I personally don't believe it's the case, usage will normalise and we'll go back to what we're used to. I just can't say when with complete confidence but I'm pretty sure things will be normal soon

We try be as honest as possible with you guys without revealing too much behind the scenes or internal stuff. This is not a capacity issue. I get what you're saying about HTTP downloads but imagine the hundreds of other clients who have the same idea as you. You won't be the only one doing the 2GB download.

As HapticSimian mentioned, shaping is dependant on demand rather than your individual usage - so how many clients are shaped depends on the overal network demand. However, deciding which clients to shape and to which extent is determined by their usage profile so that we can reclaim the maximum amount of bandwidth by shaping the least amount of clients. The more that demand increased, the more number of clients to be shaped increases - and demand can potentially increase to the point where all clients could be shaped (but we do our best to avoid this situation)

We're implementing some long term solutions to hopefully alleviate the harsh shaping being experienced at the moment, but shaping will always be dependant on demand.

People keep complaining about the same thing every single time all I read is I've done X amount (doesn't matter) and they get shaped. What people need to realise is they aren't shaped according to their use but rather with a blanket shaping method where everyone is most likely shaped. They just need to take a bit of time to read and understand that its not individual shaping. It's not like you guys are trying to hide the methods that you use to shape, people just don't understand these methods. I'm very happy with my Afrihost account for the most part, sometimes twitch.tv suffers abit when I think it should never but otherwise no complaints.

Well I got shaped the last week 24h a day. Looks like Afrihost is running out of capacity and it's time to try out another ISP...

I think it's a little unfair to post comments made out of context and without giving any context to the entire discussion that has evolved over more than a month. We did not believe this was a capacity issue, but we always were open that demand had exceeded our available resources but we were initially confident that it would return to normal levels, which it unfortunately not.

The discussion and our responses evolved as we understood more about the problem. I don't feel there was ever any dishonesty in our answers - this was the information we had available at the time.

I think what has become clear is that Afrihost was ill prepared for this upturn in demand, and that they initially didn't think in terms of outright capacity because their projections didn't align with what was transpiring. Of course the question then becomes whether some anomalous tipping point was reached, or whether their projections - just like their shaping implementation - perhaps weren't as clever as they had hoped.

Regardless, I appreciate the few posts from the AfriPeeps confirming that additional capacity is being planned, and I hope that will come to pass sooner rather than later. Hopefully this episode holds a few lessons in terms of planning for future demand, and we won't see a repeat of the past 6 weeks' ridiculousness. Because ridiculous it has been...

Thanks for posting this, I'm glad that you get exactly where we're coming from :)

All assuming of course that you have sufficient capacity not to shape huge swathes of your customer base to stupid levels... ;)

I think the gist of it is that any bandwidth management from your side must be tiered. Under normal conditions you cannot treat people moving a 100GB a month the same as you do those moving a terabyte. I sincerely hope I understand correctly that this will be the case once capacity allows.

we definitely unshaped overnight - but this seemed to be a bit slower than normal - I've asked our Dev team to investigate if all is right and if we can possibly unshape a little faster so we give maximum bandwidth back to Uncapped clients as usage decreases.

I'm really sorry about this, I know these issues are causing you a lot of frustration - I promise we are doing everything possible. As soon as our new capacity lands, all these symptomatic issues are going to go away. Until then, we'll keep doing our best to provide the best experience we can :(

Slower then normal? I was shaped the entire night, a well seeded torrent downloaded a grand total of 40mb's. i have been officially shaped for 48hours straight. Afrihost, you owe me some free turbocharges
