The Linden Exchange is in 4th Avenue, Linden behind the St Thomas' Anglican Church.
The prefixes include: 011 782 xxxx and 011 888 xxxx and cover Linden, Victory Park, Northcliff around the Aasvoelkop NGK, Risidale, Rooseveldt Park, Montroux and surrounds.

The north side of the Northcliff ridge is supplied by the Aasvoelkop exchange in Dawn Drive, Northcliff Ext 4, and that exchange includes 011 476 xxxx and 011 678 xxxx amongst others.

My line is on the 011 782 xxxx range.

I have a 4 Mbit connection with MWeb 4 Mbit uncapped (no speed throttling).

In general, I have no issues, except that sometimes You Tube videos stutter, even if there's no other activity on the connection. I wonder if that's Telkom's issue, or MWeb's?

I will look up the technical details tonight. ;)

Moved from Linden to Cape Town last June. Had a 4mb line with Mweb and lived in 7th Street on the Northcliff Corner side. Had no issues with Linden exchange. My line was lightning fast - regular speeds in excess of 3.5mbps.

On the Aasvoelkop side.

Bad latency during the day. Clears up after 11h00

If only Youtube is the issue, and other services/protocols are not affected, then it has nothing to do with the exchange itself. It could be your ISP either throttling you, or not having sufficient peering capacity with local CDN nodes which host Youtube/Google content, or some other related network problem.

Also, Youtube on PCs usually streams using the Adobe Flash player plugin. Make sure have the latest updated version. Older versions are known to give issues.

I'm in Fairland (Northcliff ext.22), my number is in the 011 678 xxxx range and I'm on the AASVOELKOP exchange on dawn drive.

I get massive latency of up to 1200ms after office hours, every day during the week from 6pm to 11:30pm, and during the whole afternoon and evening during Saturday and Sunday. Almost all this latency, according to a trace route comes from the second hop (exchange) and a speed test at saix.net also gives poor latency.

I'm on a 2Mbit mweb premium uncapped account and according to Mweb technical support, the exchange during peak hours on week nights is 95% congested, with the surrounding exchanges around 98% congested.

It seems like there is a MSAN in the making on Milner/5th, opposite Nortchliff corner. The concrete base was done about two weeks ago.

Two more MSANs in the making.

Corner of Bram Fisher and Central at the NG church.
Corner of Beyers Naude & Waugh Ave at the medical centre.

I'm on the south side of the koppis and my exchange was fooooked, making it impossible to stream ANYTHING so Telkom moved me somewhere else and is working great now but I've no idea what exchange I'm on

On the Linden exchange, number being 011782xxxx. Have noticed latency spike AH on both afrihost and plugg but nothing on my trace route to indicate a congested exchange.

So the MSAN at the corner of Beyers Naude & Waugh Ave appeared yesterday..

Unfortunately not. They only put the unit down this week. I imagine it will take some time before it's operational.

I see the MSAN at the cnr of 5th Avenue & 10 th street is now also being commissioned.

Don't get too excited. A year and a half since they finished getting the "plot" ready for the MSAN and nothing as yet..

Spoke to the techie working on site this morning. They are busy tranferring all the subscribers from the old blue/green wire box over to the MSAN.

I had a look inside the cabinet and things alive.

Will try pass by and pray they are still there. MSAN station near my house is just sitting there.. Laughing at me..

What REAL broadband is like

Subsequent to starting this thread, I've moved to the UK.

I now have Internet via BT Business Broadband and it's a VDSL2 connection (80Mbit download/20 Mbit upload). The contract includes next business day resolution for any faults, and I have had a glitch that I reported which was fixed on the same day, so it's not BS.

I am paying the equivalent of R700 per month, including unlimited bandwidth and line rental. In Joburg, I was paying R950 for a 4Mbit/s connection plus line rental.

The cutover of the MSAN (cnr 5th Av & 10th St) street is apparently scheduled for this Thursday according to a tech working on the wiring.

I am up behind the cricket field/bowls club. I see the foundation is built for the msan by beyers and milner, but its been like that for over a year now.

I now pick up latency and packetloss after 5 at night which makes me :(
