So I just got hit by the Afrihost OOB shark for bandwidth charges that I never knew existed.

So I have a client using a VPS, one we had ordered from Afrihost. I bought their silver product and was happy with it (for almost a year). I always assumed that Afrihost were like other VPS providers.... that when you bandwidth ran out, the machine was disconnected.

It appears they have no problem with vps`s running up huge bills. I see the VPS in question went around 400GB over bandwidth, so they have passed on the bandwidth costs to me. Woke up this morning to find my account had been debited without my permission for over R3000

We are busy cancelling every service we have with them.

They also do not allow you to remove your credit card from their website. So they really do hold you to ransom :/

Jamais vu... I forget they are a business.

Its strange to think that in this day and age we still have scenarios like this that would lead us to mistrust service providers... Oh well I hope you get it sorted out...

Wow that's bad! We've got two VPSs with them and I always thought they let you know when you get close to your bandwidth limit.

Ghoti, surely the extra bw charges were delineated in the original agreement? If not, you have a real case, and you should take it up with them as per your contract. But if you ignored the Ts&Cs, then you do Afrihost an injustice by posting such a vehement denunciation. Caveat subscriptor and all that.

I certainly dont recall agreeing to this, and I wont take this back. They never even notified me that in October I had gone OOB. Other people need to be warned about this.

And how come I dont see you making posts like this when people get hit by Vodacoms OOB shark? Double standards much?

I do about 60k business with Afrihosts sister company a month. Im so pissed off we are thinking of cancelling that.

Sjoe. More gratuitous insults.

Survival tip: Check the contract. Get the facts. Take it up with the parties concerned. If no resolution, then by all means hurl toys out cot. Shooting off too quickly can become a habit, and it's no endearing.

Whatever Arthur. Im voting with my wallet. They stand to lose a huge chunk of business for this.

Imagine if Afrihost were to post here your signed contract, with the Ts&Cs clearly stated, including OOB. They're probably too decent to do that. But not everyone is.

And if they're at fault, my own style is to talk earnestly about it to the people involved and negotiate a resolution in private. Only if that fails would I consider publicising it. Rants before facts are what politicians do. Not people.

I thought you were incredibly successful and rich ghoti ? Surely R3000 won't break the bank, or at the very least, it shouldn't cause you to throw a kiddie tantrum ?

You also know that you are very influential, so why not take it up with Afrihost before bursting into a fit of rage over R3000 ?

Im sure they want your opinion.

Wow, Afrihost support is slooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Been waiting for ages on a ticket.

Ghoti... in all fairness... its a case of NIMBI... (George Carlin)

Had this happen to anyone else replying to you, I am sure they would have been pissing bricks... So trolls all around.

Regardless of what is in your contract, one would have assumed that in the 21st century where advance monitoring and espionage exists--some ISPs would have taken it up on themselves to provide their clients with notifications. I mean that is how they get their monthly invoices out O.o

I shudder to think what would happen should a VPS on afrihost get compromised and suddenly do a steady traffic amount resulting in TERABYTES... O.o

Yeah, trolls are trolls :/ Ignore them.

Afrihost are lying about how much they charge you OOB as well.

I just thought I would mention it. I got a couple of notifications in September, but that was it. Last notification was Sep 17th... but the bill I am disputing is for October. Where I didnt get a single notification.

Needless to say, I have already put in cancellation requests for all our VPS`s there, and I will have a meeting later about the future of our 60k a month account we have with their sister business (technically owned by Afrihost).
