OK, so I after a month of waiting for a response from Gian Visser after sending the chat transcript to him twice, and no response, I am posting it here for you guys to read.

The short of it: I'm helping a friend who has a small website that is showing some growth find a better host. She is currently with WebAfrica, but WebAfrica's performance was never great to start with, and their servers only started responding to any PHP page request after about 10 seconds. After being unable to resolve the issue with their support I helped her by starting to look for alternative hosts.

So the plan was to sign up for an account at Afrihost and Hetzner, upload her site to each, and load the site and just browse around and check how responsive the site is compared to her current host. Nothing unusual about that? Turns out it is HIGHLY unsual to afrihost.

So I sign up for Hetzner, easy peasy, cPanel gives me a temporary URL and the site's performance is miles better. I do the same for Afrihost. Sign up, select I already have a domain since I won't be using a domain to access the site, I'll just be using the temporary URL anyway, so I just add "test" to the end of her domain, i.e. ****test.co.za, which obviously isn't a registered domain.

Oops, Afrihost can't give you a temporary domain that can serve PHP. OK, no worries, I'll simply change the domain to one of my own and create a CNAME on one of my existing domains. Nope, Afrihost can't change domains. You need to cancel the entire subscription and sign up again. (Its going to be a pretty long day if you are hosting with Afrihost and your company changes its name btw). The technical support at Afrihost tells me to just tell accounts to refund me for the subscription, since I only had it for 20 minutes, and will be signing up again.

Below is the chat transcript of this encouter. And like everyone has their favorite ones in a box of chocolates, my favorite lines are highlighted below. See it as a kind of tl;dr

In short, if you decide to use Afrihost for hosting, woe be unto you.

Irvin N has joined the chat.
Irvin N (03:15:43) : Hi Me
Me (03:15:48) : hi irvin
Me (03:15:54) : just spoke to simphiwe
Irvin N (03:16:12) : i had a word with server admin about your test domain
Me (03:16:29) : he said I must speak to accounts to ask for a credit for the cancelled domain, since I'm signing up again for the right domain name since I can't get the domain name changed
Me (03:16:35) : ok what did he say?
Irvin N (03:16:36) : please note that test domains are prohibited on our servers
Irvin N (03:17:23) : if you need a proper hosting package you need to sign up for the full service or take a cloud server for testing not on the shared servers
Me (03:17:33) : i'll tell you what I'm trying here. I'm currently hosting a site on webafrica and their support and technical know-how is terrible. I'd like to try afrihost before I go over to hetzner.
Irvin N (03:18:02) : yes but not with testing on the shared servers they are not pleased with it
Me (03:18:30) : please get your server admin to give me a call 084 *** ****
Irvin N (03:19:53) : i will arrange for them to do this but i doubt if they will hence i said they are not happy because before conducting any tests you need to have spoken to someone first
Me (03:20:49) : I'm sorry I'm completely misunderstanding what you are trying to tell me
Me (03:21:31) : just give a second here. I'm trying to get [afrihost supervisor] on the phone
Irvin N (03:21:34) : one question
Me (03:21:45) : shoot
Irvin N (03:21:55) : are you actually trying to sign up the domain ****test.co.za
Me (03:22:14) : i already own the domain ****.co.za which is with webafrica
Me (03:22:34) : I am now trying to move to a different host, since I'm not happy with webafrica's performance
Irvin N (03:22:38) : one moment
Irvin N (03:22:53) : this domain does not exist
Me (03:23:14) : so I signed up for afrihost hosting with a domain name I don't own, hoping that the temporary url will be sufficient to test the server's performance with
Me (03:24:10) : what domain does not exist?
Irvin N (03:24:11) : this is server admins problem you are testing their servers without having spoken to anyone about it
Irvin N (03:24:30) : if this was a legit sign up and not just a test it would be arguable
Irvin N (03:24:37) : ****test.co.za
Irvin N (03:24:48) : please do a co.za whois for it
Me (03:25:44) : : are you actually trying to sign up the domain ****test.co.za
Irvin N (03:26:01) : the server you are conducting a test on is shared with other clients if anything were to happen on it we risk loosing every client that on it
Me (03:26:09) : i already own the domain ****.co.za which is with webafrica
Me (03:26:29) : let me just print this
Me (03:26:35) : this is actually quite funny
Me (03:26:41) : how do I phone you
Me (03:27:01) : do you understand what test means here? test means, upload a site, and check that it works
Irvin N (03:27:20) : you can call 0116127200 ask to speak to a supervisor
Irvin N (03:29:17) : if this was a subdomain or a test domain we are looking at test.****.co.za
Me (03:30:26) : i'm phoning them at the moment
Irvin N (03:30:32) : thank you
Me (03:30:33) : please credit and cancel the account with immediate effect
Irvin N (03:33:30) : the service is already pending cancellation and i am requesting a refund from accounts for you

So there you have it. There is another thread about a Afrihost db admin telling another forum member that they can't access their SQL Server database directly since it is a "security risk"

Food for thought: If you don't know how to do shared hosting, either figure out how, or don't offer it. If a single client can adversely affect other clients on the same hosting environment your hosting isn't property segregated and sandboxed. Either way, you have serious problem and your customers are building their online presence on technological quicksand.

What was your plan to test it? Add a manual dns entry? test.****.co.za probably would have been easier. Just lol at them going on about doing tests on their servers...

Most hosts give you a temporary URL which you can use while your domain is being setup or transferred. Unaware that Afrihost is unable to provide a temporary URL, I resorted to adding an entry in my HOSTS file.

I did LOL at first, but then the harsh reality hit me: if uploading your site to their server angers their mighty server admins, what exactly are you paying for? How else are you supposed to do hosting with them if you should not try to upload your site and then perform the incredibly risky action of pointing a browser to that site. Everytime I go to one of Afrihost's client's websites now, I worried that I might actually take down all their clients by accident.

Jokes aside tho, I was hoping to get a more verbose explanation of what the support tech told me from someone who knows a little bit more. Either the tech was telling the truth, and then I think its something that customers deserve to know, or Afrihost should look at the serious problem of their own support staff damaging their reputation. From the other threads, it seems like a little of both.

If you're serious about hosting then you should really be looking at getting your own server, either virtual or dedicated. Then you will have full control and do whatever you like. Shared hosting is for amateurs. The lack of control means you will never be able to setup your site exactly how you want to, and you will always be at the mercy of some admin with an axe to grind.

Anyone worried about the people that Afrihost employs?

I can't believe that they don't give one a temporary URL! And then the person that you chatted with did not seem to have a clue what you were trying to do.

Come now Afrihost! I want to start seeing positive things about you guys again.

I'm sorry to read that you had such a poor experience. I think there is probably a miscommunication here regarding the limitations of our system and what you were wanting to achieve. As one of the biggest hosting companies in the country, we are very well versed in hosting security and best practices. These may differ to our competitors, but these are proven methods that have been the backbone of Afrihost's service and product performance.

I got your PM asking about this query, so I will chat to you more about this. From what I am reading, everything you have mentioned is possible, however it depends on where you want changes made. We would obviously have limited capability if we do not host the domain to influence DNS changes. But we can discuss over PM.

We can definitely give you a URL to preview your content, so maybe the consultant in question didn't quite understand the query. This is a pretty standard request in my mind :(
